Question about Hampton Bay 24750 Huntington III Ceiling Fan

1 Answer

Light kit has light bulb size that I cannot find bulbs for

This is not one of your catagory choices, so I didn't know what to do. CEILING FAN QUESTION: A couple of months ago, I bought at Home Depot and had a friend install, three of the Hampton Bay Classic Collection Huntington III 52" ceiling fans in antique brass. It came with a light kit including the four light bulbs. Now I discover that the light bulb bases are a totally weird size....between regular base bulbs and candelabra base bulbs. They are 40 watt and very fragile and 3 have shattered when they simply are touched. I cannot find the bulbs anywhere. It was stupid of Hampton Bay to use these light bulbs. I want to replace the light kits with light kits that use regular size light bulb bases, 4 bulbs, 60 watts each. I think Hampton Bay should do this for free. Any suggestions? Thank you, Melanie Patton mpatton123@hotmail.com 770-822-9226

    Hi Sirwriter,
Thank you for your fast answer! Your answer was helpful but didn't solve my problem yet.  My main complaint is the base size of the bulbs.  They are between a regular base size and a candelabra base size.  I am 50 years old and I have never seen any bulbs like this.  They are not ceiling fan light bulbs that I have seen.  I have been to three Home Depots, Lowe's, Wal-mart, etc. and looked on Amazon.com and other internet sites, all with no luck.  The ceiling fan came with the bulbs.  In the instruction booklet and on the box it just says "four light bulbs, 40 watts" with NO description of base size, etc.

I do not want to hassle with searching for these bulbs for the whole  life of the ceiling fan, especially since I have three of them installed.  I want Hampton Bay to give me three replacement light kits in antique brass with four bulbs each, 60 watts, regular size base.  Any suggestions?

    Thank you very much,
    Melanie

Melanie, you must have gotten a bad batch of bulbs. I have installed over 100 Hampton Bay ceiling fans and I have dropped them from up the ladder and have them bounce across the floor with no damage. I think they must have allowed a substandard batch to go out.

Home Depot is where I buy my replacement bulbs. Hampton Bay make fans exclusively for HD.

You can easily change lighting bases, as the wiring is the same for all Hampton Bay. You may even appeal to Hampton Bay on the internet and they might send you the kits. But I don't think you'd have success in a store.

If you try replacing them with bulbs from another Home Depot you may find them much hardier. I wish you the best of luck, and if you need additional help please write back.

    Hi Melanie,

I think if you get the address of the headquarters of customer service for Home Depot and tell them what you just told me in this letter, they would most likely give you a store credit for the purchase price of three 60 watt regular base bulbs. You may consider the globe style instead of the candelabra, which would put as much light as the original lights that came with the fan.

I am not sure the fan is wired strongly enough for the four 60 watt bulbs, it is more likely they would have 2 or 3, unless you were willing to accept four forty watt bulbs with a regular base.

I would explain to them that when you bought these, you didn't see the size of them. I have found them to be pretty accomodating in instances like this one. Failing a favorable response from them, your only recourse would be either to take the entire fan with lights down, all three and return them.

There is only one other way you could do this, and that would be to go to the Hampton Bay site and get the item number of the bulbs and order enough to store some so that you won't have to go looking for them.

There is not an easy solution, is there? Please keep me informed.

It is not a ceiling fan or wiring problem. It is your bulbs. Normal CFL bulbs do not work in dimmers or with remotes. Remotes work on RF signals and cause interference with the bulbs. You may also notice a buzzing sound and the lights may not go out when you turn off the switch. It is a fire hazard, can invalidate your warranty on the bulbs and will shorten their life. Try changing the bulbs to the new dimmable CFL's and see if it helps. It should eliminate your problem altogether.

They actually have bulbs that are just made for ceiling fans, but can also be used for other things as well. You can get these bulbs at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. You might bring the bulbs with you if possible as sometimes it can get confusing after looking at twenty different designs. Hope this helps.

The fan works wonderfully. The problem is to find

You don't say whether they are screw or bayonet. It sounds like they may be "candelabra" size which is about 1/2 inch in diameter (miniature are about 3/8 inch and intermediate are about 3/4 inch. If you look on the bulb there will be a manufacturer's name and part number which you can reserach on the internet.

Hampton Bay ceiling fan with pull chains not working

Whether there is a reset switch on this unit or not would depend on the model. If you no longer have the owners manual you should be able to get it from the hampton web site. Many fans have a thermal fuse inline that probably was blown when the bulb broke. The cheaper models do not and then I would guess you burned out the switch.

Ceiling fan lights do not work

You may have shorted out the light kit. Did you remove the other bulbs and put in new ones? They may have all blown when you heard the noise. Try that first, and if it still doesn't work, you may have to buy a new light kit. They are not expensive, and you can buy one without the glass bulb holders or cans, whatever you have. Then you can still use yours after you install the new light kit. Good luck!
