Problem with SD card reading

Sorry to say but this camera can only support a maximum 512 MB of memory card so the 1GB size will not be read by this unit.

There are no 4GB SD cards. "SD" cards larger than about 1GB are actually SDHC cards. SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but they are slightly different electrically. Many cameras won't work with SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

You don't need a card this big anyway. If you really take a lot of pictures, carry a couple of spare 1GB cards. Your camera won't choke on those and you will have lots of space for photos.

Your camera will accept a maximum SD card capacity of 1GB. It simply isn't capable of handling anything of a larger capacity and in particular is incompatible with the more technically advanced SDHC cards.

Your fix is to either replace your camera with a later model or to stick to using SD cards with a maximum 1GB capacity.

A couple things you might try.. remove the card carefully and check the position of the "lock" tab. Make sure it is fully in the unlocked position - not locked or a point between the two positions. Reinsert and try again.

It sounds lie you're using a card reader to download the pictures - try formatting the card while in the card reader via computer. The card should be completely empty when the format is complete. You can even try copying files to and from the card to make sure its ok and format again. When complete, try again in camera.

If the problem persists, check to make sure the card is on Nikon approved memory card list for use with the Coolpix L1 (provided below):

The list came direct from Nikon Support. Other cards may work, but only those on the list are approved. Successful use of other cards can not be guaranteed.

yes you would. It can inly accept 1GB cards. Just as a tip large capacity cards make it slow to recover from a write after taking a pic so if you can get say 512K cards still use those they recover from writing a lot faster

The S1 uses SD cards. SD cards top out at 2GB, any larger cards are actually SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity). SDHC devices will accept SD cards, but SD devices will not accept SDHC cards. They will fit physically but not electronically.

In fact, the S1 manual does not list any cards larger than 1GB.

Do you have any reason to doubt the manual? If the manual doesn't specify SDHC, then I wouldn't bother trying any but stay with SD only.

If the card is old (had heavy use) ot greater that 1GB it will not work, just buy a new card about £7 from www.memorybits.co.uk - excellant site!

never try to use more than what the spec recommends, when it says 1gb* max use 1gbmax. It is better to use two or more 1gb max than one 4gb card cause when the 4gb card brakes down you'll lose all 4gbmem, unlike when you have four 1gb. besides 1gb is too much or too big or i may say enough to mem too many pictures!
