5260 I have had this pc for 2 years now and all was fine . just recently when i press the start up button the fan starts and it sounds like the hard drive is spinning but it does not start up straight away as it used to. If i hold it in sometimes for up to 4 or 5 mins eventually it kicks into life. Any help would be most appriciated. Many Thanks.

Re: 5260

It sound like your hard drive has lost something or is ready to die. I strongly recommend that you immediately make a back up of all you important files, then even better an image of your hard drive. To do an image you can use something like Drive Image or Ghost; in this way in case you need to replace your hard drive it will not take 2 days to reinstall Windows and all the programs.

To better understand if your Hard drive isd daying, you can look at LED in the front of your PC to see if stays only for a long time. I also suggest you to use a nice and free utility Drive Fitness. You can download it from here when you install it it will create a Floppy disk.

After creating your Floppy you start your PC from Floppy and it will test all the parameters of your Hard Disk.

If Drive Fitness doesn't find any issue means that there is a problem with Windows (Some file corrupted or lost)

Does not boot up, fans start, internet plugs light, clicks on and off.....seems this is a common problem for these machines, what is the fix?

  1. When you press the Power button to start the boot process, the LED lights glow while the computer verifies that there is sufficient electrical power to activate the hardware.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LED lights on the computer do not glow or the LEDs blink briefly and then stop. There is no sound of the fan or hard drive spinning, and the screen remains blank. The computer will not start if there is insufficient battery or AC adapter power.
  2. The BIOS queries various hardware components used for the startup boot process.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LEDs glow but there is no fan or hard drive sound. The LEDs may glow briefly and then go out.

The LED lights blink, stop, and then blink a second or third time, but there is no sound from the computer and the screen remains blank. The sequence of the blinking lights indicates a specific error code.

A series of beeping tones is heard. The sequence of beeping tones indicate a specific error code.

If a hardware component has recently been replaced, or if the PC has been jarred or shaken, there may be a loose connection to the memory chips or hard drive which prevents the computer from starting.
  3. The BIOS loads the basic input (keyboard) and output (advanced LEDs / display screen / boot drives) devices into memory.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LEDs glow, the fan or hard drive sounds, are heard, but then the boot process stops and a black screen - with an error message - displays.

The boot check has detected a communication error or conflict with a hardware component that must be corrected.
  4. The BIOS loads the Windows operating system and starts the services that allow low-level control of all of the background operations.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LEDs glow, the fan or hard drive sounds, are heard, the HP or Compaq Logo displays on a black screen, but then the boot process stops and a blue screen - with an error message - displays.

The boot check has detected a hardware driver error or a software conflict that must be corrected.
  5. Control is transferred to the Windows loader to initiate the display of the advanced settings in the Windows environment.

The Windows logo displays during this step.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the computer performs all the steps in the boot process, but after the Windows Logo displays, the moving Windows progress bar or the rotating cursor stops moving and the boot process stops.

An error message may display on a screen with the Windows logo. In some instances, there is no specific error message.

A black screen appears and the computer attempts to restart.

The Windows self-check has detected a software conflict that must be corrected.

Dell Dimension 8400 Start up Fan Noise

Might be a hard drive issue. I had the same problem with one of My desktops. I replaced the hard drive and it worked fine.

Computer noise

More likely one of the fans, but could be the hard drive. Open the case and listen. Fan on power supply, fan on processor, or hard drive are the most likely sources of the noise. Processor fans and power supplies are both cheap and easy to replace. Hard drive is a bit more expensive and you must back it up (which you already regularly do, right?) if you want to keep your data.

My E machines 5260 won't start up! It appears to

Techguru2009: You might have a static electricity charge on your motherboard. First you need to ground yourself before you open the case. Remove the memory cards from the motherboard. Turn your computer on without the memory installed, you should hear several beeps. The system is letting you know that you have no memory. Turn computer off reinstall the memory cards, close case and boot up. You might also want to reset the bios while you are at it, you can do this by removing the cmos battery for ten minutes. Warning: do not open the case while the plug is still on. Safety first. I hope this helps.
