Question about Sony STR-DB930 Receiver

Volume indicator light

The little red light that shows on the volume knob has been out for some time. Considering fixing it myself. Can this be done? No other problems so maybe I should just live with this small flaw? Thanks for any advise or solutions

The volume on the radio is staticky when turning the volume up or down. How can I fix it myself? It is a 1960 Magnavox stereo console.

Yes. Get a can of tuner cleaner. Remove the knob and with the stereo off spray the cleaner down the shaft. Rotate the control a number of times. Replace the knob, turn the unit on and check it. Most of the time that'll do it.

Doesn't sound like a fuse. They don't fix themselves when you reach 75%.

Try shaking the volume knob while in the 30-50% range and/or try (with the power off) rotating the volume knob numerous times from 0% to 100%. If when you plug it back in it responds ANY differently, you might have a bad volume potentiometer. If when you shake the knob you hear static or intermittent sound, you have a bad volume pot.

The only other thing I can think of is that the wiper of the volume pot is not in contact with the windings inside the pot until you reach the 75% mark. When the volume comes on at 75%, does it start off kind of "static" then come in loud and clear? Also try this.... adjust the volume pot to 74% (or when the sound just begins to come on). At this point shake the knob. If you hear static, replace the volume pot.

Unplugging it when still on shouldn't cause any damage... in fact it probably hasn't considering it works at 75% plus.

Why is my soundfreaq speaker going in and out of volume?

You didn't indicate the model so just going to throw out a common problem with that symptom. If there is a rotary volume knob and it causes "scratchy" audio when rotated then the potentiometer(behind the knob) needs to be cleaned. Open the speaker to access the potentiometer and spray a little WD40 inside the potentiometer (if possible) then rotate the knob a few times. If it was scratchy before and is no longer then the problem is likely solved, reassemble then test. Most other problems are somewhat more complex in troubleshooting and I would need much more info. Good luck!

I recently had my fender acoustasonic telecaster checked out because the volume kept shorting out. It seems the volume pot was dirty or had a short. Took it to my local fender guitar and fender electronic...

If the problem is actually the volume knob, then the guitar shop did not fix it and you should bring it back. There is a test you can do to see if the problem is your volume knob. With the guitar unplugged, you can turn the knob up to the max and down to the min a lot of time (like 50-100 times or more) plug it back in and see if the problem is a little bit better, if it is I would bring it back to the repair shop and demand they fix it properly.

The problem could be the cable you are using. Sometimes it can seem like it's a volume knob problem when really it's a cable issue. Jiggle the cable and connector while the guitar is plugged in to see if the sound cuts out at all or you get crackling.

The right channel in my TEAC AG-550 receiver won't work unless the volume is cranked up really high. Then it pops in for a while. Can this be fixed myself or will I have to scrap the unit?

Hi, Yes you can fix it yourself, Turn off the system and unplug from the wall, spraying a little WD40 inside bitween the knob and the recess, using the extension tube that comes with the WD40, turning the knob back and forth while doing so, don`t worry WD40 is not a conductor. Plug it in and try it out after you are done, then tell me how beautiful it sounds.

The RSX BOSE radio stopped working.

If you disconnect the bose radio, it loses it's programing.. Needs to be taken to a GM dealer and vin coded. as for the volume knob, it's digital.. if it's not working it wont be a connection issue, it's likely a flaw on the board. The best place to get that fixed is United radio in NY. 1-800-448-0944

Sony ICF-9740W radioThe volume dial crackles as it is switched on

Go to an electronics store and buy a can of spray contact cleaner. Remove the 3 top screws on the back cover. You will see the volume control on the lower left. spray the control with a few squirts of the cleaner, and rotate it several time to distribute the cleaner in the control. Spray again if necessary. This should solve your problem.

Need to fix the time

I have the the sony cdx gt 400 and the manual is of no help but I figured it out. You have two options...option 1 is wait until 1 o'clock and hit the small reset button on the radio behind your detachable face, or option 2 is a even better option. Press and hold the volume button in and options will appear...then by tapping the volume button you will cycle through the various options until you find "clock adjust" then press the small "display" button below the volume knob and also right next to the "source" button...the hour will flash turn the volume knob to desired hour then tap the volume knob or display button and the minutes will flash then turn the volume knob to the desired minutes, and you are done...hopefully this helps
