the fuse i replaced was the thermal fuse and the breaker is not set up on 2 seperate 110 watt circuits

  • brown2181 May 25, 2009

according to the diagram there is only one fuse and i have already replaced that this year. it was holding the dryer from starting which is no longer my problem...but if there is a problem with the circuit it has to be internal seeing that there is only one breaker switch for the dryer.

since you mentioned fuses.. there are two circuits needed on a dryer, one runs the heat, the other one runs the motor (tumble). therefore there are two fuses. check to see that BOTH fuses are good. on older panel boxes that is also a pullout panel fuse that has fuses that look sort of like shotgun shells. both must be good.

Here is the link for the wiring diagram... heat is definatly on a separate circuit.

I think I would start at the beginning ..the plug socket. If you look at the diagram, a volt meter between LI and N should read 110V. between L2 and N should also read 110V. Those are the 2 separate ciruits back to the panel box. between L1 and L2 should read 220V. I believe L2 to N on your circuit will read 0V, L1 to N will be 100V, and L1 to L2 will be 110V. anything else and the problem is internal and you will need to begin the circuit chase.

Electric dryer? fuse replaced in the dryer itself? check your breaker to make sure you still have 220 coming in. half the breaker could be tripped...motor would still run, no heat..

Dryer that wont stop tumbling

Well we know the door switch is functioning properly so that usually just leave a timer issue.

Timer knob not turning and its not heating up

If you are setting the knob to begin a cycle AND the drum turns when you start it AND the timer knob does not advance, the timer is likely defective.

Some dryers with truly automatic cycles (using moisture or temperature sensors) will not advance the timer if there is a no-heat condition due to a bad thermostat or heating element. This would show as the dryer tumbling a load forever and the clothes are cold and wet when checked.

If the dryer will not do anything at all AND the timer knob does not advance, check the power (circuit breaker/fuse), then the dryer door switch. When the door switch is defective or the door isn't fully closing, it stops everything, period. There is a thermal fuse on some machines that will also cause this problem.
Good luck from Detroit, MI.

Dryer will not stop running

Your machine may have a feature called wrinkle guard or wrinkle shield, which basically keeps tumbling the clothes without heat to prevent wrinkles from setting in. Turn that feature off and see if that does the trick.

The dryer heats and shuts off in about 30 seconds repair guy has changed a thermo fuse? and i still have the problem i've checked my ducts no blockage it runs on air and delicate fine but on reg heat in...

its your timer that needs replacment. not the thermal fuse.
if the thermal fuse was ever tripped, it would not start at all. you would only hear the ticking of the timer.
if other cycles work its the timer not any of the sensors or fuses.
dryers are very basic, and are completely controlled by the timer (or control board for digital models)

Dryer won't heat--element replaced; tumbles fine

Before you purchase any more parts, you should have use of a multi meter. If the dryer is not heating at all, and of the following parts could be bad.......Operating (cycling) thermostat, high limit thermostat, thermal fuse, timer, or motor centrifugal switch. All but the motor switch can be easily checked with the dryer UNPLUGGED using the ohms feature of the meter.

Kenmore dryer

Okay, the little white thingy you mention is the thermal fuse. If it were to blow, the dryer would not run at all. They usually blow like a fuse and require replacement, however, I have experienced on one occasion where the dryer would shut down in the manner you mention, and it was caused by a thermal fuse that was tripping off. I couldn't explain it, but I replaced it and the dryer worked fine after that. That could very well be a possiblity. Normally, problems like this are caused by the operating thermostat going bad. That the other thingy thats mounted next to the thermal fuse. The link I sent you should have information on how to check them. The heating element should not be considered a problem at this point. It would not cause the dryer to shut down if it were to fail. Your symptom would be a dryer that runs, but does not heat. Let em know if you have further questions.
