Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

Typewriter does not make a mark on page.

I hit the button, the little hammer moves, and nothing shows up on the page. It's like a printer that's run out of ink completely. The darn thing worked absolutely fine two days ago. No one seems to know what the problem is.

Maybe it is out of ink or the hammers are not making contact with the ink

Hi Gary, I was a typewriter tech for 7years, let me answer some ? for you. I think the thy writer you was built by Brothers typewriter. 2. The tab still works because it is spring driven and not part of the motor drive. 3. When they carriage return is engaged it puts the most demand on the motor-drive. 4. I saw many of these typewriters that A. The motor drive belt popped of the pulley, or B. It broke. I you can get to it you will probably find one or the other, also don,t left up on the key levers or you will bend the linkage, the small amount of movement you see in the keys are the "locks" being released. The striker wont hit the letter

Does the striker move forward, many times the machine needs some 3 and 1 oi in that area, not alot... just enough to free up sticky hammers.

My typewriter won't type. The cartridge moves, but nothing prints

The ribbon may be broken or binding so that it cannot advance.

  1. Is the daisy wheel locked in the forward position?
    1. Pull the black lever back, away from the platen.
    2. Lift out the daisy wheel and inspect it for damage; replace the daisy wheel if it is damaged.
    3. Re-insert the daisy wheel and push the black lever towards the platen until it locks in place.
  2. Is the ribbon moving?
    1. Lift the ribbon cartridge out of the typewriter
    2. Inspect the ribbon for damage
    3. If the ribbon is silver, it is exhausted and must be replaced
    4. If the hammer has been striking in one place, there will be a clear area near the center of the ribbon.
    5. Turn the colored knob on the left side of the ribbon cartridge counter-clockwise to advance the ribbon a small amount. Replace the ribbon if it will not advance.
    6. Re-insert the ribbon
  3. Turn on the typewriter, insert a piece of paper into the typewriter and type a few letters
    1. Did the hammer move forward?
    2. If the hammer moved, did the ribbon advance with each keystroke?
If the hammer did not move or the ribbon did not advance, the typewriter will require service. If the typewriter still does not make an impression on the paper, your typewriter will require service.

I am typing and nothing is printing? I've changed the ribbon and the corrective tape?

If it SOUNDS like it's trying to print, the hammer moves a little, then you have a bad solenoid pad. You'll need to have it serviced.

Alarm light keeps coming on after each page is printed. I have to hit the reset button before another page will print.

press the go button 3 times and it will give you a printout that shows the error, it most likely will be to clean the drum which you do by moving that little blue lever on the drum back and forth around 20 times. If it's a paper feed error, clean the feed roller with a damp cloth.

Typing away then you look up & nothing there

Is the striking hammer moving when you hit any key? If it isn't then you have the same problem as I do.... and when I figure that one out, I'll let you know. I suspect the hammer solenoid, or the electronics that drive the solenoid are fried. I haven't opened the machine up yet but it could be a loose connector... but I know have much hope for that being the problem

The keys won't strike. I tried everthing and nothing works. You hit a letter and it just moves as iff you are hitting the space bar.

The impact solenoid has a rubber pad or cap on the tip that hits the hammer and it has probably broken off...needs the impact solenoid repaired or replaced and then the impact adjusted.

The part you need is available at

There is a clutch drive that releases the hammer to strike. Probably needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, probably not worth repairing.
