These vacs can stop up in almost inaccessible places. That sound means that it has stopped up somewhere and the electric motor is in a strain. Keep it running like that long enough and the motor is toast. I have one that seems to prefer the hose area where it goes by the motor and into the bag. The tube from the motor to the bag also is prone to stop up. To take these apart requires that you start at the beater bar area and work you way inward. In certain areas if you look closely, you'll see little arrows pointing to the screws. These are the ones that will allow you to get closer to the innards of these. When you get to where the motor is, look for blockages from the attachment hose. It takes only small items to completely block it off which will effect performance from both the beater bar/normal intake and also from use of the hose itself. The b***ards can be a pain to keep functional. I've personally removed rather sizeable wads of dog hair from mine that mucked up the works rather than went into the bag. Belts for the beater bar are notoriously short lived in these as well. When they break, the vacuum is only good as a floor sweeper. Stock up on both belts and bags for these. Good luck!
