It sounds like you have spyware on your machine that is causing the problem.

Go to www.superantispyware.com and download the free spyware remover. Once you have installed, updated and done a complete scan reboot the computer and see if you get the same problem.

Why does a question mark on a folder blink at startup and not turn on laptop?

Hi Joe. It means that the start-up drive has some corruption of some sort. I've posted previously what to do in such situations so just search for flashing question mark and there's a walkthrough of possible fixes.

My Mac Book will only go as far as a blue screen with a folder flashing a question mark. What does this mean?(also there's a ticking sound near the DVD drive when i first start up)

The DVD ticking sound is normal and happens every time you power on. The blue screen of death is not normal. The flashing question mark means corrupt start up file. Re-install the operating system or insert disc 1 of your gray install disc and go into disk utilities and select repair permissions. Then select repair hard drive.

My Powerbook G4 turns on light, fan, chime but no video.

Your hard drive has lost a file needed to start up the machine. The folder with the question mark means it cannot find a useable Operating system. I hope you backed up your files you needed becuase the only real way to recover the machine is to reinstall the OS from the install disk. You must format the Hard Drive from the format option on the install disk and reinstall the OS.

Can not get the Operating system to Start, Grey Screen at Startup

Sound like your motherboard is going bad. ibook G4's are notorious for this. The only thing you can do is either replace the ailing motherboard or try to find the breaks on the existing board. I am going to try and bake a board and see if that repairs any SMD *(surface mounted device) breaks.
I will keep you posted!

On startup, white screen with question mark folder

This usually means a corrupted disk structure. From your latest install disk, even the original, put in the CD/DVD and power up holding the C key down until it loads the installer. Answer the language question. From the Menu Bar, select Utilities or Disk Utility. In there select your drive on the left and then press Repair Disk. After no errors, press Fix Permissions. There may be some "errors" shown for permissions that can be ignored, they have used links (lrw...) where it expects none. This will most often fix the problem.
You might try a "safe mode" boot, since System 6 or before. Hold the shift key down while booting. You will not have networking or drivers for mice, etc. You may be able to Repair Disk and get things working this way. Holding the Option key down allow you to select another disk if you have bootable system on it, USB or Firewire.
There seem to be a lot of this problem lately. Just remember to Verify/Repair Disk and Fix Permissions before and after every install. -Ken

Screen goes white, flashing a folder with a question mark

The flashing folder means that the computer can't find the boot system on the hard drive. If your girlfriend's step-dad has removed some parts of the OS, then the system will not start giving the 'flashing folder' result. You will need to re-install the OS from the system disk.
Insert the disk into the computer and it will boot from that and take you through the install procedure.

Question mark when turn on laptop

Unfortunately, the clicking sound means that the hard drive is bad. That is why it will not boot. If it is under warranty, call Apple support. 800.275.2273 in the US.
800.263.3394 in Canada

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

When I turn on my Mac Book Pro

The flashing folder with hard drive symbol is telling you that the computer cannot find a bootable system folder (operating system). This could be because the hard drive is working properly, or the operating system folder has become corrupted. Try booting up from the system CD or DVD that came with your Mac Book Pro and see if it can repair your hard drive.
