Question about Jandy Lite2 LJ125 Ceramic Gas Heater

2 Answers

Pool heater was running and pump shut off - appears the heater overheated and many of the tags and labels inside the panel melted or charred. The heater will now not restart - what can I do or look for to determine the problem, and can I fix it myself?

I am find now, so thanks for the help. It was the fusible link which did as it was supposed to and cut the heater off when the water flow was interrupted.

    Thanks again.

Any one can do anything if they listen, use their references and know when not to compromize safety.

Now, what do you want to do> Diagnose it first _ Did it in fact burn up. If the heater was fired without water in it, It more than likely, but not necessarily did. Heaters do get hot and the water keeps it from getting too hot. If you can, turn off the heater fuel and or/ electrical circuit breaker.. The heater should not have turned on without circulating water throgh it by thr pump. So let's go back and see if the pump works and is not defective, electrially or plugged. up. Put power to it. Do not stand in water while water is beiing released. The pump may run and still have a defective impeller, moving no water. Actually you can ck for water flow at the point it discharges.into the pool..If you detect little to no flow, You've found the cause for the heater to cook itself. Shall we continue?

You need a switch(fireman switch) if you have intermatic timer) if you have compool aqualink or that hayward one you need to wire your heater to it so it has a delay time to cool down

The "Fusible Link" in the electrical circuit/loop did as adverstised and failed, thereby cutting off the heater. I found the trouble shooting steps on the Jandy website, and followed them to solve the issue.

Pool filter pump won't shut off.

I'm assuming it continues to run when you switch the system to "service" mode. You probably have a relay stuck shut. Unless you are very comfortable with working with high voltage it's best to get a tech out to verify the problem and switch out the relay. If you are okay with it the replacement isn't very difficult. You'll have 4 or 6 wires to move from the old relay to the new one, and switch out the small black and red paired wires that go from the relay to the control board. Make certain that your breaker is off while changing it out.

How do you determine if a pool heater runs on Natural gas or propane

It should say on the tag inside the cabinet, or on the gas valve. Another indicator is that natural gas typically is fed through a 3/4" galvanized pipe, LP is often run through a 1/2" copper pipe. Be sure before trying to fire it up.

Reddish smoke

Sounds like it possibly may have frozen internally. Ice blockage and water was not circulating thru it, yet the ignitors fired and fired until it overheated and shut down. Possible that the exchangers may have been fried, that is why the funny color of smoke. Once weather is warmer and not frozen, run the pump with heater off and check for leaks. If no leaks in the heater and you can confirm water is circulating thru your system (water returning into pool thru the return lines) turn or fire up the heater and inspect/monitor its operation.

I have a Hayward Power-Flo LX SP1515-Z2-EBK3 that is being used to pump water through 2-4x8 solar water heater panels. The pump intake is 1 1/2 inch, discharge out is also 1 1/2 inch. The pump is located...

I have a 3/4 hp hayward pumping thru solar panels, too. 1-1/2 discharge thru 50 ft of 2inch pipe, up 12 ft then thru (4) 4x12 panels. Mine is on 115 volts ac.
You have plenty of pump and when you run a pump with low flow, amperage is low. You are not tripping your breakers, it sounds like the pump is overheating. Is it hot to the touch when it shuts down?
Do you have an ammeter so you could check your amps?
What size wire is running the 60 ft to the pump?

I don't have any other ideas to share.

The motor keeps turning on & off like it is overheating

it sounds as if it is overheating. there is a sensor inside all motors that shuts the motor down if it reaches a certain temperature.
If your motor shuts down after running for a while then 15 minutes or so just comes back on then that is what is happening.
Could be the result of not enough air around the motor to keep it cool, or something inside the motor making it work harder than it should like the bearings going out.
