Question about Hitachi 50SBX78B 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

TV won't power back on after turning off; had parallel lines running through picture prior to powering off.

Hitachi 50SBX78B had horizontal lines running through the picture, then when we turned off the television, the television won't power back on at all.

How complicated is it to repair?

  • robynnhall May 25, 2009

I guess what I mean is, when you say "death diagnosis", does that mean our TV is a lost cause? Any idea of level of difficulty of repair and general cost?

  • robynnhall May 25, 2009

Are there usually damaged circuit boards with this type of problem? Is that why you mentioned it here? We're trying to figure out if we should attempt a self-fix or take it in to a shop. My husband is good mechanically, but not with electronics usually. :)

How much does a power supply cost? And how do I find the right one? Thank you so much!

Hi roby

the power supply is at fault in this matter. when you open the unit up
you will be able to spot a leaking or a molten "capacitor". once located, this capacitor is mounted on the power supply assembly. you may now have this assembly removed and replaced with a working PS.

this issue is considered the death diagnosis of most TVs.

hope this helps.

regards

voodoo

well from 1-10 diff level, im going for 6.5. as 1 is changing the unit itself and 10 is repairing busted circuit boards.

well electronics wise, this is repairable but i suggest moving to a television professional to have it repaired. usual costs runs from 50-75, plus parts.

    about 250$ the most.

the model of the right part you need is actually in the series.

Hitachi 50SBX78B Horizontal lines and bow

John, Hitachi site is down at the moment, if you remove the clips on the front of the IC`s you will see the numbers of the convergence ic`s, and yes they are a pain to get out, they are probably stk 392-110`s if they are the originals, you`ll have to un-solder 36 pins total to get them out, check for burnt resistors in the general area of the ic`s and replace any that are burnt before turning the set on,be sure to order a tube of "heat sink compound" to apply to the back of the new IC`s, once on the set will probably still look poor, this is normal, run the set for minimum of 15 minutes then push the " magic focus button " inside the front door panel, after it has finished running magic focus it should look great, video-tek

Tv will not power on

If you have Hitachi model number 50UX58B, 60UX58B, 50UX58K, 60UX58K, 50SBX78B or 60SBX78B and you have the following symptoms you may want to grab a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kit that includes the parts and instructions to fix these models. This is a fairly common problem with the above model numbers. It is typically caused by a blown capacitor and pico fuse. Again, you can get a kit from the above address.
Here are the symptoms...

Primary Symptom: No Audio or Video. Power light will come on briefly then shut off.
Other Possible Symptoms : The green LEDs on the circuit board light up for a few seconds then turn off.

Hope this helps,

Hitachi 50SBX78B 50" Rear Projection TV

If the power supply board is the only thing affected, I would suggest calling PTS:1-800-844-7871 and give them the model and what you are looking for. This would be the simpliest thing to do. They rebuild boards and maybe more cost affective than trying to repair yourself. Hope this helps!
