Have you tried to plug the hard drive into your computer before you turn it on, it may detect it on startup

Click on the link below and then click on the "Fixit" button. Windows has a patch for all external devices not recognized by PC's including HD's. This is especially an issue for those who've recently installed SP3. Best of luck with your problem.

I USED MY FREE AGENT DESK EXTERNAL DRIVE 500GB ON MY MAC GOT A NEW DELL AND CONNECTED THE DRIVE...IT SHOWS UP BUT I CANNOT OPEN IT PLEASE HELP

if you still can see files on the Hard disk from MAC, then the reason of being unabe to explore your file from MS windows is that your hard was initialized by MAC with a format that windows cannot read.
move your data from external hard disk to your MAC then format your hard disk from windows OS with FAT32 format .this format is readable on both MAC and WINDOWS

External hard drives are plug and play, the drivers are build into windows.
IF the hard drive was connected when your computed crashed, and the hard drive was in use, it may have damaged it.
If it does not automatically connect to other PC's looks like it has been damaged

My computer doesn't recognise the drive is connected.

moz-screenshot-1.pngmoz-screenshot-2.pngTry Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management.

Check there to see if the drive is listed, "online" and has a "Healthy" Partition.

Drive manager is grey and says that no drive is attatched.

You need to get a Seagate Harddisk Utility software to check the disk intergrity.

Although hardware issues like can sometimes be very difficult to fix due to the impact on a volatile component on the harddisk which are most times not replaceable

Its the rubbish software that Seagate have bundled with their drive which will not allow you to backup the system folders. Solution is to use another backup utility, a google search will quickly locate numerous FREE software products which will alow you to copy anything. USP-porti doesn't find the external hard disk - occasionally

If it has been working and now does not not. If the system is ME or NTFS[XP /2000/VISTA] If the port check shows nothing untoward Then you must look to the the disc or its connection or power supply. So -if you can check out the power supply Is it self powered[internally of via a 'power brick'] or does it rely on USB power from the computer? If the latter- disable/unplug some other other USB devices. If it 'works on its own power' check that it is indeed running. Change the USB cable for another. Comeback if still in trouble
