Question about Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop

Shuts off unexpectedly

My Acer Aspire One (one month old) has begun shutting off unexpectedly - just a click and it goes black. Happened a few times last week, then was fine for a few days, now it doesn't stay on for more than 3-4 minutes. Boots up fine, doesn't seem to depend on software. Haven't installed anything beyond what it came with. Tried system restore, didn't help. Battery is fully charged & this happens whether or not it's plugged in.

Clarification for stanalicthbr: nope, not a heat issue (am operating at about 70 F); fan and all lights shut off as well. Restarts without any error message.

It's still under warranty; problem is that I'm traveling (the whole point of having a netbook, right?) and the nearest authorized repair place is 6 hours away. Just hoping to have a clearer idea of what the problem is; I'm waiting for the repair folks to confirm my warranty & get back to me with more info. Does seem like a major hardware issue. Thanks for the feedback all!

when it goes black is the power light and hard drive lights still on? Are fans spinning? Could it be overheating? Does it feel hot?

Hi there.
Because the machine is only one month old i would recommend that you take advantage of the manufacturers warranty and send it in for repair, it won't cost you anything to do this as this sounds like a serious hardware problem or failure which is not of your doing.
Telling you to open the laptop will only void your warranty so this is not recommended.
Your computer will only be away for a week or so and i know it could be a pain not having it there, but for peace of mind this is the correct procedure.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

    Hi again.
Yes this is a serious issue for a brand new netbook and your not on your own either.
Acer are having serious issues with these type of laptop and i doubt it will be an easy fix for the store to perform, i expect that it will have to booked in or sent off for repair, either way you have no choice but to do this.

    Regards

Less than six months old ... Acer offers a one year warranty ... I think I'd be checking the warranty out ... It may be some type of virus... yet, I'd be talking about the warranty instead of fooling with it.

My computer is randomly shutting down. Sometimes it will work and other times it will not. I think the processor is overheating and causing it to unexpectedly shut down. the screen goes black, the power...

Few reason for the shut down
Could be heat, electrical,

1. try cleaning all vents with compress air in order to remore dust and fuzz that can be cloging the vents.
Once this done, verify that fans works proprelly,(check air flow coming out of vents) if they dont they will need to be replace or cleaned out.

2. Check power supply unit, and battery.
Sometime power supply unit is defective, getting too hot and power output is not stable and shuts down the laptop. ( change power supply unit) check if battery hold charge. if not change battery

3. Check connections for looseness and contact

If all seems normal, and none of the mentionned point seem to be defective, the cause is deeper and would need to be looked at by a technician.

I have an Acer Aspire 6530 running Windows Vista and today it started shutting off at random. When it shuts off the bottom 2/3 of the screen has blue stripes across it, and on the blue is text I cannot...

Good question.

Does the computer feel hot when it shuts off?

Does it always happen at the same exact time?

Can you try booting the computer into Safe Mode? (What Happens?)

First thing I'd try is uninstalling the video adapter driver under device manager and restart the computer.

Let me know what happens!

If it's only 5 months old, then it's still under warranty. Right now, I'd advise taking it back to have it fixed instead of taking it apart to replace hardware and possibly voiding a warranty.

Acer Aspire 9300-3655: Shuts Downs When Idle

It sounds like you are getting a blue screen error.
Most of the time these are resolved by manually running CHKDSK /R

To check for a blue screen error, right click on "My Computer"
Go to properties, click on the "advanced" tab, Click on the "Startup and Recovery" settings button.
Under "System Failure" uncheck "Automatically Restart"

Now if your computer is restarting do to an error then you will see the blue screen.
The important information to give back is the 0x000000** part which is displayed.
