Acer Aspire One, ZG5 ~ A disk read error occurred, Press Ctl+Alt+

I have an Acer Aspire One, ZG5 ~ It was purchased in December, 2008. It worked well for several months but now when I turn it on now I get this message

A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I do that, but it does the same thing over again. I've tried F2 & F12, but that doesn't do anything but show me settings, which I'm not comfortable changing.

What is wrong and what do I do?

Thanks, I thought it might be a hardware failure... I tried to start it in the safe mode and nothing happened...

Thanks again... I'll take it to Acer...

After searching and reading many doomsday comments about this error message and what it means and what caused it, I found the simple solution with the Acer Aspire One ZG-5 mini-laptop displaying the "A disk read error occured... Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" error message, the probable simple solution is to Press Alt+F10 during reboot and the laptop will go into the Acer eRecovery mode.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • It may or may not ask for a password or require creating a password, this password will be required to use eRecovery in the future. If you forget this step, you will need the recovery disks in the future to reformat the system.
  • Also please note that depending upon the options you choose you may lose any data on the computer because it restores the original operating system as the computer came out of the box.
  • Also, because restoring or recovery is a lengthyprocess you will need to plug the computer into the AC power supply.
Follow the instructions as they appear on the screen to restore or recover the operating system.

Also, it is a good idea once you have restored or recovered the operating system to go on the Acer website and download any patches or updates available.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - I tried all sorts of key combinations and this has taken "dead" Acer into eRecovery mode. Keeping my fingures crossed now for a successful resuscitation.

Hey,

its one year warranty.

could be bad hard drive, incorrect settings or corrupt windows / linux installation.

A remote possibility could be faulty motherboard, unlikely though.

well if you already took it to acer get their opinion on it, you could try the recovery cd's that you got with the unit if you got any?

- a "disk read error occur pertains to your hard drive
- try going to BIOS and check if the HDD is detected on system information
- if the HDD is detected, reset BIOS to default
- if it's not detected then you have a faulty HDD

I am getting a disk read error occurred. Press ctr-alt-del. what can i do to fix this

Your computer cannot read your copy of Windows from your 'C:' disk-drive.
You need to purchase a replacement disk-drive, and re-install Windows onto the new disk-drive.
I hope that you have a good backup of all your files!

"A disk read error occurred. Please click ctr +

You have as it states, a disc read error which means you have errors on the hard drive.
As soon as you get into your system run CHKDSK/F, that will attempt to restore the damaged files.
Make backups and look for a replacement hard drive.
Hope that helps.

Sounds like the hard drive has errors.
Boot to a windows XP cd.
Repair using the windows console.
at the repair console type:

chkdsk /R (hit enter)

Let that run, it takes a long time.
If it's able to repair the drive enough for operation it will.

If it cannot you will be forced to replace the hard drive.
