If you try safe mode, the restart and still have the problem, insert the original Operating System Disk, and start the process to reinstall the operating system. However, when you get to a window that offers you to press "R" to repair the OS (after it finds windows), press R and do the install. You won't lose anything, but you'll need to update your system again.

Chances are, you've gotten a virus or a Malware on your system that has caused this problem.

Download the free version of Malwarebytes (not a fake, but the real one) and also Vipre Rescue from Sunbelt Software, and run it. Then get Vipre antivirus/antispyware (just $29.95 a year) and install it.

Also, get a good registry cleaner - I recommend CleanMyPC Registry cleaner.

Word has taken over my computer; when I click on any program icon, Word opens

If you know when this problem started, I would recommend you use System Restore to go back to a restore point from before that time.
  1. In Windows, right-click on a program icon. Windows displays a Context menu.
  2. Choose Open With from the menu. (Don't choose Open; make sure you choose Open With.)
  3. If Windows displays another level of menu, make sure you select Choose Program. Windows displays the Open With dialog box. (See Figure 1.)
  4. In the list of available programs, select the correct program for that icon.
  5. Under the list of programs there is a check box labeled something like "Always use the Selected Program to Open this Kind of File." Select this check box.
  6. Click OK.
These steps change the file association for a single type of file-the type you right-clicked on in step 1. You will still need to check other file types to make sure they open with the proper program. If not, change the associations as described above.

Hacking Your Way Through the Interface

Use Registry hacks to make a grab-bag of great interface changes.
Hidden in the mazes of the Registry are countless ways to hack XP's interface. Here are some of my favorites.
Hide All Icons in the Notification Area
The System Tray, also called the Notification Area, is the small area on the far-right side of the Taskbar, in which utilities and programs that run in the background, such as antivirus software, show their icons.
I don't find it a particularly intelligent use of screen real estate, so I'd prefer not to see the icons there. To hide them, run the Registry Editor [Hack #68] and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer. Among other things, this key controls the display of objects throughout XP. Create a new DWORD called NoTrayItemsDisplay. Assign it a value of 1. (A value of 0 will keep the icons displayed.) Exit the Registry and reboot.
While you're at the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer key, you can also delete the My Recent Documents icon on the Start menu. Create a new DWORD called NoRecentDocsMenu. Assign it a value of 1. (A value of 0 will keep the icon displayed.) Exit the Registry and reboot.
Hide Only Certain Icons in the Notification Area
You might like to display some icons in the notification area but hide others. If so, you can hide icons on a case-by-case basis. You'll do it by delving through menus, though, not by hacking the Registry. Right-click on the Taskbar and choose Properties → Taskbar. The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box appears. This dialog box, as the name implies, lets you control how the Taskbar and Start Menu look and function.
In the Notification area of the dialog box, check the box next to "Hide inactive icons," then click Customize. The Customize Notifications dialog box appears,
Click on the program's listing in the Behavior column, and choose from the drop-down menu to hide the icon when the program is inactive, always hide it, or never hide it. Click OK twice. Your changes will take immediate effect.

The taskbar is upside down and at the top of the screen

On Windows computers, you should have what is known as the taskbar. This is the gray strip that runs across the bottom of your computer and which displays icons for quickly accessing programs you frequently use. The taskbar also shows the "Start" menu, clock and icons for your Internet connections. Sometimes icons do not appear properly in the taskbar. This usually is because the computer is new and hasn't had icons placed in the taskbar manually, or because a default setting is off in the OS properties. Both are simple fixes.

1.Right-click the "Start" icon and select "Properties."

2.Select the "Taskbar" tab in the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialogue box.

3.Uncheck "Lock the taskbar" and "Auto-hide the taskbar." Check "Show Quick Launch." Since the Quick Launch box isn't available in some systems, you may need to right-click on the taskbar area, choose "Toolbars" and then select "Quick Launch."

4.Navigate to the programs you want to show on the taskbar through the "Start" menu or on your desktop. Right-click the program and drag it to the taskbar. Choose "Create shortcuts here" from the menu that appears. The icon for the program should appear in the taskbar.

I have an HP Pavilion dv2000 and i dont know how to open webcam.

I have an HP Laptop with the webcam. Here is info on it.

There should be an icon on the desktop that you can double click to activate it. Then if it is activated the blue light will go on next to the webcam. If there is no icon do the following:

If the webcam icon is not on the desktop, click Start , click All Programs , select HP Pavilion Webcam to open the webcam from the Windows Start menu.
    • Select HP Pavilion Webcam Demo for a demonstration of the features.
    • Select HP Pavilion Webcam to open the webcam window and display an image from the webcam
  1. If the webcam icon is not on the desktop or on the Windows Start menu, click Start , and My Computer to open the My Computer window. The webcam should be listed under the Scanner and Cameras heading. Double click on the icon to open the webcam window and display an image from the webcam.
  2. If the webcam icon is not displayed on either the desktop or the My Computer window, or cannot be started from the Windows Start menu, the webcam is either disabled or the drivers are not installed.
Enable the webcam If the webcam icon is not displayed on either the desktop or the My Computer window, or cannot be started from the Windows Start menu, the webcam may be disabled. To enable the webcam, do the following actions.
  1. Click Start , right-click My Computer , and then select Properties .
  2. On the My Computer properties window, click on the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager .
  3. Click on the plus ( + ) sign next to Imaging Devices and locate the webcam item in the device list.
  4. If the webcam is listed under Imaging Devices but there is a red X on the c00678428.gif icon, the webcam is disabled. To enable the webcam, right-click the HP WebCam 1000 icon and click Enable . The webcam icon should now display on the Desktop or the My Computer window.
  5. If the webcam is not listed in the Device Manager window, you should install the original webcam drivers.
If you need the drivers see below.
  1. Install the original webcam drivers If the webcam is not listed in the Device Manager window, do the following activities to install the original webcam drivers using the HP System Recovery.
    1. Click Start , click All Programs , click System Recovery , and then click Application and Driver Recovery .
    2. On the Application and Driver Recovery window, select Driver installation and click Next .
    3. Select HP Pavilion Webcam from the list, and click Install .
    4. When prompted that the installation is complete, click OK .
    5. Allow the PC to restart and test the operation of the webcam.
When the webcam is operating, visit to the HP web site to look for and install the latest updated webcam drivers. If the quality of the image is not acceptable, you can perform a functional diagnostic test of the webcam.

It takes my PC a very long time to boot up, what can i do?

If you have installed any softwares recently it might slow down the pc as many softwares will install a startup file in order to start faster. You can shut these programs from starting up when the pc starts.
I put 2 steps to resolve this in order of simplicity.

Remove icons from the Startup folder
Some programs open with a shortcut icon in the startup folder (Startup icons). Use the following steps to show any startup icons that might be hidden and remove startup icons from the startup folder:
NOTE: Removing items from the Startup folder does not uninstall the software program.
1. Right-click the Start button, and click Explore . The Windows Explorer window displays with Start Menu already selected.
2. Click the plus sign ( + ) next to Programs .
3. Click Startup . The shortcut icons are listed in the right pane of the window.
4. To show any hidden icons, click Tools , click Folder Options , and click the View tab.
5. Click Show hidden files and folders (Windows XP/ME) or Show all files (Windows 98), and click OK .
6. Click an unwanted startup item in the right pane of the window and drag it to a blank area on the Windows desktop. Release the mouse button to drop the icon onto the desktop.
7. Continue dragging unwanted icons until all unwanted startup icons are on the desktop. Click Yes to any window that display asking to confirm the removal of a read-only file.
8. Close Windows Explorer and restart the computer for the changes to take effect. Delete the startup icons that were moved to the desktop after you are satisfied with the way the software programs are working.
If you find that a particular software program should not have been removed from the Startup folder, double-click the startup menu item to open the Startup window. Then drag the icon from the desktop back into the Startup window.
