Thanks for your advice. I tried Sony Service - no help.
Used a POST card, it showed me where the POST was stopping. I then changed out the video card. Problem resolved.

It's the HDD, or the HDD controller. Give sony a call. Based on the number and sequence of beeps, they can tell you exactly what this issue is.

One long continuous beep on startup

That's a RAM error. First, open it up, remove power cord and remove the RAM sticks then put the power cord back and turn it on. Will be the same beep. Then power off, put one RAM stick in, and power on again. If no beep, put the other stick(s) in (it may be just a bad contact). If same continuous beep, remove stick and put the other one in, by the same procedure. Power on again and see if the continuous beep is coming again (if it's not, then first RAM stick is faulty). This way you can see which RAM stick is faulty further on depending on how many RAM sticks you have. If it does it on all of them, it may be the slot(s) that is faulty you can only figure it out with a new RAM stick.

How to add 1GB memory

First you need to find out what Memory ( Ram ) it requires as there is DDR DDR2 SODIMM but seeing as it is a newish computer it could be a DDR2. Way to find out is looking up on the internet. Unplug everything from the computer , then look on the back. With the computer front facing you remove the 2 screws on the left side and then pull the side panel back and away from the tower. Look inside and you will see a silver box with a fan on it ( thats the Chip fan ) and next to it you should see some Sticks that are green and have black squares on them, what you do is note what slot is free and make sure you grab the new stick on each corner and push it down onto the free slot ( as long as the 2 tabs either side of the socket are pulled away, then it will jsut clip into place with a little pressure.

Thats a Ram change, but make sure you know what type it is.
