If you boot your comp into windows using the "tab" hey to navigate, press tab until the start button is active, press the spacebar to open the menu, using the arrow keys scroll too Programs, accessories,
system tools, system restore, you should at this point be able to begin the sys restore app.
Have you tried booting using the F8 option and choosing "last known good configuration"?

Needtogetaroundcomputerkey

You can adjust turn on or adjust settings for these features on the Use the computer without the mouse or keyboard page in the Ease of Access Center. Open the Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard page by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Ease of Access, clicking Ease of Access Center, and then clicking Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard.
Select the options that you want to use:
Use On-Screen Keyboard. This option sets On-Screen Keyboard to run when you log on to Windows. On-Screen Keyboard displays a visual keyboard with all the standard keys. You can select keys using the mouse or another pointing device, or you can use keys on the standard keyboard. For more information about using On-Screen Keyboard, see Type without using the keyboard (On-Screen Keyboard).

Use Speech Recognition. The option allows you to control the computer with your voice. With a microphone, you can speak commands that the computer will understand and respond to, as well as dictate text.

Microsoft 1023 Mouse

I've had the same problem with a Microsoft wireless mouse. Ended up throwing it away and getting a new one. Chances are while in storage or being carried around, something has gone wrong. Also, if you kept the batteries in it while it was not in use, that can damage the circuitry (sometimes).

As an after thought, when you started the computer, did you see a message saying it was installing a new USB device or a new pointing device or a new user interface device? If not, then the computer is not finding the antenna and without the computer recognition you'll get no response from the mouse.

Can't get past black screen and mouse

Power off your computer, then power on hitting F12, del or whichever key it states to go into setup. From the setup menu, select change boot order or boot menu. Set the CD ROM to the first boot device. Save changes. Restart. Your computer should boot to cd starting the installation.

Assist with an Operating System start issue? PC is a Gateway GT5228

the following will re-install windows without destroying your stuff but you must follow it exactly !!!!!!!
  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
  3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. To Repair Install, press ENTER

I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
  4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
  5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
  6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Monitor on but not working properly

If you just built the computer..the motherboard will give you a warning that some hardware has changed. you have to connect your keyboard and go into the bios and make sure everything is right. To be safe select set to default factory settings , save and reboot the computer. This is to prevent the settings for a previous cpu be used for the new one.
