Question about Gateway 835GM (835GH) PC Desktop

1 Answer

Dont have recovery disks and have virus...actually just missing disk 2

My Gateway 835GM w/Windows XP media center edition has a virus and wont let me run the restore program to simply restore to earlier date before virus. I had my high speed internet (charter security suite) security software running at the time and it caught two viruses, but part of the problem was the computer kept turning itself off before the software could disinfect the computer. When I try to turn computer on it either just stays at the welcome screen or it will log on and before too long the mouse and keyboard will not work or it just keeps giving pop ups telling me I need this virus protection software and keeps trying to get me to get the full version (I assume this IS the virus as it happened last month, too and I was able to restore it and no problems till this past week...and it also happened on my father's computer who lives an hour from me, too). I cant recall the name of what it said, but it gives a little light blue/white shield sign in the task bar immediately at start up, but no program is listed under add/remove programs. Since I cant restore my computer, I figured I would have to run recovery disks. The problem with that is I had an issue last year after power surge and had to send it in to Gateway to be fixed. It was still under warranty at the time. They actually had to replace parts, though. It is no longer under warranty and I do not have the money to pay Gateway again. I found my set of recovery disks that Gateway had sent back with it, but disk 2 is missing. There were 5 total and they were not copies, were originals. Is this something anyone would have on hand who works on this model and can sell me just a disk 2, or do I have to go back to Gateway? I have searched the house over and cant find it. I dont know if Gateway left it out or if I lost it. I cant imagine why I would have separated them, though.

If the popup you're getting is from something like "MS Antispyware 2009" or similar, that's the same trouble I've seen on several other computers. Download a removal tool called ComboFix. You can find information on how to use it and links to download it here. This is a handy tool even if the virus you have is different as it will fix a number of virus and trojan problems. ComboFix can be run in safe mode if your computer can't start all the way into Windows. Turn your computer on, and when you see the Gateway logo screen press the F8 key. This will give you a startup menu screen from which you can pick starting in safe mode. This prevents Windows from loading everything except the minimum stuff it needs to start. Run ComboFix and let it repair the troubles it finds.

Down laod xp recovery disk

If you're running Windows XP and Windows crashes or becomes unusable, you may have to run a Windows XP recovery setup disk to make your computer usable again. When purchased, many computers don't come with a Windows XP recovery setup disk, but you can download one for free from Microsoft. The Windows XP recovery setup disk holds the computer software and files that you need to assist you in rebuilding your operating system.

Place a formatted floppy disk in your floppy disk drive. You will need six formatted floppy disks. Visit Microsoft's Download Center and download the version of the setup disk for your version of Windows (see links in Resources). http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=E8FE6868-6E4F-471C-B455-BD5AFEE126D8 Home Edition http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=8030 Professional Edition set up disks for floppy http://www.download3000.com/download_17676.html XP Recovery CD Maker Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional Edition have their own recovery setup disks and you must use the correct disk for your version of Windows. Click "Download" and then "Save." Find your floppy drive or optical media drive on the menu and click "OK." If Windows isn't functioning at all, you will have to perform these actions from a working PC. Remove the last floppy disk when the Windows XP recovery disk download is complete and place it in the computer on which you need to use it. Shut down your computer and then turn it back on. If your computer prompts you to boot from the disk, press Enter. If it doesn't, you'll have to go into your BIOS to set the computer to boot first from your disk drive. When your computer boots from disk it will automatically start running the Windows XP recovery setup disk from which you can then set up Windows XP. Hope this helps.

MY WIDOWS XP WONT BOOT IN ANY MOOD

Hey,

you will need a copy of the windows installation cd or the recovery media that comes with the computer.

Ones you have that you have to reinstall windows or restore from the recovery media to get your computer working normally again.

You can also take the computer to a local professional who can install it for you if you don't have the disc.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks,
Ekse

1) Try F11 instead.
2) Dunno. Corruption?
3) chkdsk /f
4) Microsoft EULAs are much less crackable than their software, according to BitTorrent.

the following id taken from my own XP media centre laptop.

line 1 [boot loader]
line 2 timeout=30
line 3 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
line 4 [operating systems]
line 5 multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

ignore the "line 1,2,3 etc" I added them for clarity the formatting in this answer pane messes up the last line.

also before you get to edit the start up file make sure that the default operating system listed is the sae as line 5 starting from the "

hope this helps.

Hi,
Try Scanning your Computer For Computer Viruses.
then re-install Windows XP.
Your files will remain intact, if you select to leave the hard-drive As it is ( rather Than Format it ) or setup on a different Partition.
Backup your Valuable Docs/Files First.
Windows re-installation will replace any Missing-deleted Corrupt Files.
hope This Helps you.
