Problem with steam wand

Steam wand only steams for about 20 seconds and then stops. I cleaned the wand and it appears to be clean. The steam wand will only work if I briefly run the espresso side and then select the steam option. The wand first expels hot water and then steams for about 20 seconds and then completely stops. I noticed that the machine no longer makes the thumping sound.
