I am putting together an ibook g4 i was given as a project and i dont have a POWER SUPPLY, will an ibook run on just ac power without a battery installed. i have made a 24v supply using a 2.5mm plug. i am just tryingh to power it up to see if the motherboard is ok.
Hi there. Make sure you have the voltage and amperage right first before you try and power up the motherboard. Most laptop motherboards run on 15, 19 or 20 volts and take a different amperage like 3.42A for example. The power in will be displayed underneath the ibook so take a look there. Don't plug a 24 volt power supply into it unless it specifies that because you could damage the board.

Either power or logic board problem. If it chimes but does not boot and the screen lights up then it is a good sign. Will it do anything?
If does nothing try a different power supply first.
Try removing battery and disconnecting power supply, then try to start it without battery and just power supply.
then try charging the battery overnight. If the lights on the battery show any charge after a few hours with it plugged in and the computer turned off, try letting it charge overnight and then try starting it without power supply connected. If none of these thigs help, I would have to look at it.
Warning: Resetting the Power Manager on any PowerBook or iBook will permanently remove a RAM disk, if present, and all of its contents.
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC power adapter.
Remove the battery.
Press and release the reset button (shown here) located above the Audio/Video port on the left side of the iBook (Dual USB) computer by inserting the end of a paper clip into the small hole and gently pressing the switch once.
Wait 5 seconds.
Reconnect the AC power adapter.
Put the battery back in the computer.
Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.
The power button on these are a if I recall actually fixed to the keyboard top surround.
You could try rotating it slightly to see if that helps.
Other than that you will have to take to an apple service agent to get replaced.
If you are not using the AC adapter (you are using only the battery), then the battery may be dead - simply replace the battery. If you are plugged into the wall, and the light on the power cord, where it meets the computer, is green, the unit is receiving power. If the unit is receiving power and it will not boot at all, then either the motherboard or the hard drive is most likely problem. You can replace the board, but it may end up being more expensive on an older G4 than it is worth. Once you are able to determine if the unit is receiving power, the only thing you can really do from there is take it to a repair shop and have them perform a test on the power supply, hard drive and/or the motherboard to see which one of those is causing the problem. If the hard drive is fine, you will most likely be able to recover your files.
There are several models of iBook G4. The following sequence applies to the "14-inch Early 2004."
Remove all peripheral cables. Remove the battery. Reset the power manager by pressing the key combination Control-Option-Shift- power. Then plug the iBook into AC power and attempt to start it with the power key.
If this procedure does not being it back, invasive diagnostics are required, in which case you should being it to an Apple-Certified tech for repair.
Replace your battery.
When a battery is dead, the charge level it reports is meaningless. When a battery reports a charge but still won't keep your machine running for more than 30 seconds, it's dead.
The fact that the OS knows when the battery is present or absent doesn't mean anything, as it it just reading the presence of the battery interface board.
