Question about Maytag Neptune MDG5500AW Gas Dryer

Dryer turns no heat and can smell gas

On sensor dry it starts out now, with about 90 minuts and doesn't heat most of the time and the gas keeps coming out. We changed out the vent it has a new one. Jumped across the high limit thermostat switch and unit keeps burning. Before i jumped the switch it burned about 10 seconds and flame kicked off.

Airflow through the tube keeps the sensors from tripping. low flow, quick cycle. when its all together, does it blow out back strong? is the blower stripped? gas keeps coming out scares me..what do you mean?

Thermal Fuse
If the air flow in the dryer is restricted, the temperature in the heating chamber can get hot enough to blow the thermal fuse. If the fuse blows, it cuts power to the coils that control the gas valve. The fuse is usually mounted to the exhaust duct just inside the back panel. You can check its continuity with an ohmmeter. If, after disconnecting the fuse, you get any reading other than 0 when you touch the leads of the meter to its terminals, it has blown. There's no way to restore it -- you'll have to install a replacement.

Igniter and Gas Valve Coils
TEST with a multi meter: The igniter is an electric conductor that works like the element in an electric heater, glowing hot enough to ignite gas when you turn on the dryer. This conductor can burn out, and when it does, it may glow, but it won't get hot enough to ignite the gas. At times it may give a reading of continuity yet fail mechanically and not get hot enough to ignite flame though it gets hot and glows and even may show Ohms or continuity ( close circuit) ?
Occasionally, the Gas safety valve and the electric coils that control the gas valve are defective -- they can wear out when the dryer gets old. When this happens, the igniter glows, but gas never enters the heating chamber or does not stay consistant.
Performing a continuity test on either part will help you determine whether or not you need to replace it. But the coils should also be tested for amount of resistance as well as Ohms. As they may be showing ohms yet not putting out enough resistance to keep proper gas pressure flowing. Most coils should show at least 1300 ohms ( GIVE OR TAKE 150 OHMS). Anything significantly less Thus u get an ignition but then it soon goes back out. The flame does not stay lit.

Air Flow and Heat
The motor that drives the tumbler also drives a fan that circulates air through the heating chamber and the tumbler and expels it through the vent. If the air can't circulate, perhaps because of lint blockage, the heating chamber overheats, which prompts the cycling thermostat to turn off the gas. The thermostat resets when the chamber cools, but the chamber heats up quickly and the thermostat again shuts off the gas. The result is that the temperature in the tumbler doesn't stay hot, and your clothes take longer to dry, if they get dry at all.

Warning
There's a big difference between a dryer that doesn't heat up at all and one that just doesn't get hot enough to dry your clothes. In the first instance, the problem is usually a defective part, and things should be back to normal after you replace it. In the second instance, the problem is caused by restricted air flow, and you need to clear the lint filter and vents and take steps to prevent lint build-up. If you don't, you'll use more energy for drying than you need and the dryer may continue to malfunction. Worse, you may have a dryer fire.

Hello - From what you are describing, if the dryer only heats up sometimes but provides a gas odor, it could possibly be a defective gas supply or igniter. Try resetting the unit by unplugging it or flipping the household circuit breaker off. Wait approximately ten minutes and turn on the fuse for the dryer. Turn on the dryer and select a normal cycle. If it proves to be ineffective and if the issue continues I suggest contacting a professional to move forward accurately. Keep in mind since it is such a complex unit, the technician will likely verify that it doesn't have a defective sensor, control board or high limit thermostat.

you could have bad gas coils.if the timer doesn't advance in auto dry most likely you're having heat problems,when the dryer heats and then the heat shuts off then the timer will advance,when the heat comes back on the timer stops,it does this until the clothes are dry.gas coils when starting to fail will work normally until they get hot and then no heat until the coils cool down then they will work again,on time dry the timer just keeps counting down until the time runs out no matter what's happening to the dryer.i've seen the coils fail after the first 10 minutes and other times for 20 to 30 minutes but usually if the load is big and in time dry the clothes will feel warm and you'll need to dry them a second time to get them fully dry,also while you're in ther you should clean out the dryer at least once a year,clean out the duct that the lint filter slides into,vacuum out the cabinet where the motor is and blow out the vent line,if it's a long run i use a leaf blower to blow out the line,remove it from the back of the dryer,stick the leaf blower into the vent line and blow it out,i've blown out birds nest out of some lines, your clothes will dry on time,you won't go through so many parts and you won't have to worry about a dryer fire,the gas coils are on top of the gas valve,remove the two phillips screws,lift off the cover and change out the coils.next time you use the dryer keep an eye on it,after it runs for 20 minutws start checking it,you'll hear a click,then another click and the flame will lite,look into the gas tube and if the flame isn't liting then you have bad gas coils.

If your dryer is not drying like it once did or if you just have nottaken the time to give yourself a clean dryer in a long time then youneed to do that. At least once a year the dryer cleaning should takeplace. Lint build up in the dryer duct is one of the main causesfor your dryer to fail.

If fabric softener sheets are used in the dryer--clean the two stainless steel strips of metal on the lint filter housing with a SCOTCHBRITE PAD--scrub back & forth several times to remove the waxy residue from the fabric softener sheets. Most,if not all manufacturers do *not* recommend using sheets in dryers that have a moisture sensor (electrodes).
However--using a SCOTCHBRITE pad keeps the wax off those sensors which can be seen if looking *into* the dryer drum and at the lint filter housing.
If only *liquid* fabric softener is used in the washer--clean the dryer sensors once a month. Liquid softener also contains wax which can slowly accumulate on the dryer sensors from the laundry washed in the washer.

Dryer start up fine then the gas turns off as ignitor continues


Hi Jim. Perhaps this will help you.

The burner assembly consists of the gas valve, the igniter and sensor, and the thermostats. The gas supplied to the appliance is turned on and off by the gas valve, as follows:


  • First--when you close the dryer door, set the timer, and press or turn the Start button--the motor starts. When it reaches full speed (in about a second) a switch on the motor turns on, which allows the electricity to flow through a simple thermostat to one side of the gas valve.

  • The gas valve then sends power to the igniter, which glows bright orange.

  • As heat and light from the igniter warm up a sensor that's right next to the igniter, the sensor circuit opens, then supplies power to the other side of the gas valve. This completes the circuit and opens the valve.

  • Once the valve opens, the gas rushes out and the igniter ignites it. As the gas burns, it keeps the sensor warm, which keeps the gas flowing.

  • When the dryer reaches the pre-set drying temperature, a simple thermostat turns off the flow of electricity to the gas valve and therefore turns off the gas.

  • When the temperature in the dryer falls about 20 to 30 degrees, the thermostat again allows the electricity to flow through to the gas valve, and the cycle starts over.

If you selected the Automatic setting, the cycle continues until the clothes are dry, then the timer advances and turns the dryer off.

If you selected a timed setting, the cycle continues until the time has expired, then the timer turns off the dryer
