Question about Kingston (DTIU3/2GB) 2 GB USB Hard Drive

USB not woking

I have a problem with my usb drive which I bough a week ago. It was working for few days, and then suddenly it stopped. When I plug-in the drive, system does recognize it as a usb drive and install averything but I can't access the drive nor format it. When I try that it showes a massage "Please insert a disk into drive" and a letter of that dirve. I've checked it with WinXP, NT, Vista with same result on every each one.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: USB not woking

Based on your post/description, your USB drive is faulty. You can try salvage/repair it but chances are all data/information would be lost. If Windows can't do anything try using HP's USB FlashDrive Utility. File name "cp006049.exe."  Do a Google, download, install and execute.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things went or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

My external has stopped working- it also has an odd sensation when I pick it up rather like two identical magnet ends being held together. I only bough it 4 months ago and want to get the data from it!

is the issue a power 1 or does it power up but your computer doesn,t regonized the harddrive within the external...have you tried a separate power supply/usb cable....or try a different usb port in another computer

If it worked a few days ago then you could restore your system to a week ago and it should recognise again
i see no mention of what oprerating system you are using so I will assume XP.Vista or Windows 7

Using XP then follow these steps

Go to Start
Then All Programes
Then Accessories
Then System Tools
Then System Restore

This will give you a calendar to choose an earlier date
select one and click accept or continue and wait for the machine to shut down and restart
Once restarted a message should appear saying if the restore was completed.

Plug in your drive and test for fuctionality.

Let me know if you need the procedures for Vista or Widows 7 because they are a little more envolved.
All tho the steps are simalar I would much rather give you the correct infomation.
Hope this helps,Cheers Misterdj

Laptop suddenly stopped recognising my external USB hard drive

I had the same exact problem with a WD2500xms passport. The problem was the USB cable. I went to the store and bought a 6' USB cable ( $26 at Radio Shack) with the same specs and now, no more problems. Also I called WD technical support (800.275.4932) and asked for a new cable. The WD customer serverice was very helpful and said it would sending me a new cable for free. When it arrives I'll return the 6'er.

Are you using an external power supply for the disk? If not, you might be overloading the USB port. It should not happen, but USB ports are limited in the amount of power they can output. Especially laptops might face such problems.

Do other USB devices still work on those USB ports? If so then the port is at least not broken.
Sometimes you can uninstall and reinstall the USB hubs and controller devices in the Device Manager to fix USB problems.

Dish dvr does not recognize storage expander any more

I dont have a solution. Just to say that I have had the same problem, on about 3 occasions. (Out of the blue, it will suddenly workon a random day, when I unplug and replug the USB cable. But somee days I can unplug replug 20 times or more and the DVR will not recognize the Showcase). Talked to Dish network a few times. They seem to be aware of the problem, but they will only say that they are working on it. Two of their reps have told me that it is a problem with the DVR design, not the Seagate Hard Drive, and the "fix" is to just unplug / replug the USB cable until it works. Go figure.......

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter ( and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.
