Question about IBM ThinkPad T42 Notebook
My IBM notebook T42 gives FAN ERROR message and switches off. It is an intermittent problem and many times I am unable to get it started. Once I was able to get it working, since then I have not switched it off. I just close the LCD panel and put it in hibernation mode. I can also reboot in this mode during automatic updates. This seems to be BIOS problem connected with some hardware. The Lenovo service center failed to identify the problem. Are the schematic circuit diagrams available to trace this problem? I also want to know if I can use larger hard disk than 80 GB that came with the machine. If so what is the maximum limit. Is BIOS upgradation needed for this and how do I do it.
The fan may be faulty or clogged with dust.
Check the fan to see f it spins freely and remove dust from the heatsink fins and fan assembly.
The specification in the manual for the T40 series shows the largest hard drive is 80 Gb.
It may be possible to install a larger hard drive, but check with Lenevo first.
