Question about Olympus Stylus 1010 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Lens won't open

Camera is fairly new, never been dropped - when turned on, the lens attempts to come out but won't open so retracts back in.

Can view stored pictures, just can't take anymore : (

The problem you are describing is a problem witha sensor in the lens assembly of the camera. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.

Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $87.85 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.

A few weeks ago, shortly after I'd taken a pic, the lens refused to retract and the camera switched off. It has never been dropped or had anything spilled on it. Strangely, when I press the button...

Sounds like a lens error. Look for sand particles around the gaps of the lens barrel (a single particle can jam it). Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

My wife dropped her camera and the lens is cocked sideways in the open position and will not retract.

You will need to have it serviced. A local camera store may be able to do it. If not, Fuji has service centers you can find online.

Camera lens wont open or close after being dropped. it won't turn on and take pictures

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Camera lens does not retract & view finder is just blue, will not go to other screens

The lens maybe out of track. Perhaps you have bumped the camera or dropped it. Look if the lens are a bit tilted, if so, try straighten the lens with your fingers, very gently. Hope it works.
