The thermal fuse blows out midcycle. It used to occur about every 6 months but is getting more frequent

Our dishwasher keeps blowing the thermal fuse. Model is a Kenmore 66517022401. The frequency of fuse failure is getting more frequent. What is causing this?

Not sure at what point the fuse fails but there is water left in the dishwasher so it could be either the wash or rinse cycle.

The dishwasher is nearly 3 years old but the problem started even when it was less than a year old. The wiring all looks good. No sign of being subjected to high heat. I just bought a new dishwasher yesterday so will garbage this one.

The first thing I would inspect is the heating element for damage that may beginning to short out.

If the element checks out good, a failing motor could blow the fuse.

If the motor checks out, look for shorts in the wiring both in the door and under the unit.

It is hard to be more specific without knowing the make & model and the dishwashers approximate age (years.)

Good Luck! Please report back what you found, OK?

I have a Whirlpool Quiet Partner 3. It sat up for a few months because the control panel went out and it took a while to save up and order a new one. Now it blew the thermal fuse. I put a 15amp...

A 15amp automotive fuse is rated for a 12VDC system in an automobile, not a 125VAC houshold electrical system in an appliance. I don't think your automotive fuse can handle the start current being drawn by the main wash pump as the dishwasher starts. I would recommend you replace the thermal fuse in the dishwasher with an appropriate replacement BEFORE assuming you have a problem with anything else in the dishwasher.

Some Whirlppol manufactured dishwashers had a noted problem with the thermal fuse. The gauge wire used in the control panel would heat up and cause the thermal fuse to blow prematurely. The manufacture's answer was to provide a replacement kit that you were to splice in place that had a larger gauge wire. The thermal fuse replacement kit for Whirlpool dishwashers can be purchased at any of the following websites:

The thermal fuse should be listed under the "Control Panel" parts listing. The average cost is usually about $15 or less.

You might have debris clogging the drain/disposal. My wife just tried to wash labels off of some old jars, the paper is stuck in the drain and my TCO is blown.

Kenmore thermal fuse keeps blowing and im getting a white powdery film

If the thermal fuse blows it is a direct result of heat. The most common place for the heat to be generated is the wire connections to the fuse, the wire connections on the main control board and the door switch.

The thermal fuse comes with a small wire kit, be sure you or the technician used that wire kit if not you will continue to have trouble. If you have then look the board over closely, especially the black plastic plugs, if you see any dark spots or loose connections make sure to tighten them up. Then check the wires to the door switches make sure they are tight connections. If all these are okay then check the gasket on the left side that surrounds the vent, if heat escapes this gasket it can migrate over toward that thermal fuse.

I hope this helps

My Whirlpool GU2400XTP dishwasher keeps blowing the fuse. It sat up for 6months because the control panel went out and I couldn't afford to get a new one. Finally replaced the panel and the thermal fuse...

Are you replacing the wires along with the fuse? It is important to change the wires too as they are usually the cause for the fuse blowing. Be sure and get the fuse kit that includes the wires.

Is your water too hot? Hot water is fine but too hot of water can cause the fuse to blow over time. The temp should be somewhere around 120 F. Anything over 130 F is way too hot. I personally don't use a long high steam final rinse or high heat because over time the steam and cause the electronics to short as steam and moisture can get into the keyboard and inside panel.

Does the whirlpool GU1500XTLS1 have a fuse - I do not have any power to the console?

Yes, there is a thermal fuse located behind the operator console. The part number for the replacement kit is 8193762. You can view an illustration at It sells for about $13 and the instuctions with a wiring harness are included with the kit.

NOTE: You MUST follow the instructions and use the wiring harness. There were some noted problems with certain model dishwashers2.gif where the wire gauge on the thermal fuse was too small and would heat up causing the thermal fuse to blow prematurely. The replacement kit includes a wire harness with a larger gauge wire that handles current better, preventing the fuse from blowing prematurely. To ease your mind, there were no reports of fire hazard.

If you need to view a diagram of your dishwasher, enter your model number at the website mentioned for some excellent exploded view illustrations. The thermal fuse is listed as item 6 under the "Control Panel Parts" heading.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Model 110.68622700 keeps blowing thermal fuse.changed fuse a month ago

If the thermal fuse is blowing, it's because the inner dryer is getting too hot. The control thermostat is the likely culprit. It's not cycling the heating element is staying on continuously. I would change the operating thermostat. If you go to, put in your make and model, it will pull up all the parts for your machine.

Thermal fuse keeps blowing

Mr. Larry (guru?)
The thermal fuse is just that It doesn't protect the circuit from over current although it certainly can open in that case. It is there to protect the board from overheating , thus the term thermal. The dishwasher could be allowing the water to heat too hot or the water heater in the home is turned up too much. The heater could also be shorted to case thus allowing it to be on even though the control is not calling for it especially if the polarity is incorrect to the dishwasher or the relay on the board could be welded closed so that the heater can't turn off even though the thermostat is satisfied. The best thing is to get a person who can check these things. You don't necessarily need to change the board with a fuse. I have changed many fuses with no other problems and verified that the machine was still working years later. sometimes the fuse just blows!

Dw stopped in midcycle.

There is a thermal fuse located on the electronic control board housing that may have failed. This replaceable part (gray or white) is clipped on to the side of the housing.
