HDD from dell optiplex g1

I formatted a HDD and I want to put XP on it and use as primary HDD. My primary I use has Win95 on it and has missing Dll files. I want to replace it with the HDD I formatted.  Where do I put it to install XP.  I need an OS to do that.  When I put the formatted HDD in primary position I don't have an OS so it just sits there.   Help!!!

You can connect your HDD as primary or secondary, doesn't make any difference, anyway as you said I also suggest you to put it as primary. When you insert the Windows XP installation disk and you boot from your CD-Rom it will shows you all the disk and partition asking where do you want to install it.

(To boot from CD you have to enter in the BIOS and change the device priority at boot, let me know if you know how to do that)

At this point from the installation of XP you select your HDD, select to format as NTFS (Better then FAT32) and you start the installation.

At the end of the installation Windows XP will modify your MBR (Master Boot Record) to add a dual boot including Win95.

Be carefull that at  the end of the installation from XP you will be able to read files on the old HDD containing Win95 but not viceversa, because Win95 cannot read NTFS partitions.

When you power on your PC you should have a message like "Press DEL to enter setup", in some other PC instead of DEL is F2 , Compaq use F10. So if this message is not hidden (It's another set up in the BIOS) you should be able to see it at the bottom of your screen as soon as you power on your PC and complete the memoery test. Even if you don't see the message keep pressing the DEL button on your keyboard as soon as you power up.
If you are pressing the right button you should enter in the BIOS menu.
    Look for something like

and using the arrow keys and enter select your CD-ROM as first boot device.

If your motherboard is little bit older you may have this type of BIOS
if this is your case use your arrow keys and enter and go on Boot Sequence and change with CD, C.

    Remember to save before exit!

    Keep me posted.

If you want a clean install just format your XP drive. Then boot with your 2000 cd in the drive. Make sure it is bootable and your bios is set to boot from cd.

My dell optiplex gx520 has detected sata hdd on bios but cannot boot. i have been compare the hdd to another dell cpu and its work.

the reason why windows won't reconize it as a boot drive is because you have to format the harddrive to NTFS. You have to connect it as a secondary drive on another machine and format it. To do this you have to
click on start, right click on 'computer' and click on 'manage'. Once on 'computer management' click on 'disk management' and select the disk you want to format, right click on it can click 'format'.
Hope this helps.

Computer will not boot up

This is because of either the system has shutdown while it was processing a windows file. sometimes repairing the OS or running a CHKDSK /R in the recovery console will fix this problem. if that doesnt help i recommend you change your HDD

How far through the setup does it get?
Have you done a full format on the HDD?
Does the HDD detect in the BIOS? Is it a confirmed working drive.

Samsung 200gb hdd

When u bought a new hdd, it shud not have any partition on it. but in ur case, I assume u have formatted it to ntfs but no operating system is installed in it.

If u want to make the new hdd as slave and have another old hdd as primary, that have already an operating system installed in it, then the problem shud be hdd boot priority in bios. Enter ur bios and check for hdd boot priority and put the old hdd to the top most order, then restart. this shud fix the problem.

If u installed OS in ur new hdd (win xp),
1) ntldr or ntdetect.com is missing on root dir. (c:\). If u have another computer that works and have xp installed, just put this new hdd along with the current hdd and boot to windows. Copy ntldr and ntdetect.com to your new hdd. Or another way is just repair using windows xp boot cd.
2)the windows partition is not set 'active'. to set active, boot into winxp setup and press 'r'. this will lead to recovery console. type ur passwrod for admin (def=none). use diskpart command to set active. for easy way, put the new hdd to another computer. boot to windows. rightclick my computer, choose manage. on left pane select disk manager. rightclick on ur partition, then set active.

Hope this help

How to detect two IDE drives with same brand

You need to set one of the drives to be 'master' and the other to be 'slave'.
This is done by positioning jumpers on the back of the harddrives.
Pretty sure that on the drives is explained somewhere how to position the jumper, for several options.

Good luck,
Please post some feedback.
