New Hoover belt nbr 385280-34 installed, belt still too loose.
My Hoover upright vacuum, model U6476-900, has a front agiator belt that is loose and slips on the agiator so it will not turn under a load. I replaced the beld, 385280-34, but its the same problem, too loose. Is there a tension adjustment on the tension roller? How is this tension problem corrected?

There is no adjustment. As they wear they cut the groove in the roller deeper. Sure fix,and what Hoover will tell you to do is to replace the roller. If your like me though that isn't any good. so what I did was wind wax coated dental floss into the groove that the belt rides in and in and then put a couple of drops of super glue to hold the end and it works like a charm. Don't put too much in there the belt has to have a groove to ride in.

If you are refering to the roller underneath, the belt nees to be replaced. Simply remove 4 bottom screws and then the roller, Place new belt on roller and thenon motor shaft, pull belt with the roller to install in position and install bottom plate.
The belt is going to be loose as long as the vacuum cleaner is in the upright posistion. If you have the vacuum cleaner with the handle locked in the upright setting, then the belt will be tight around the skinny belt. Once you release the handle of the vacuum cleaner, you can watch as the belt tightens over the roller brush. There are numerous problems with this particular model. We have recorded a very helpful video review of how to replace the belt, and do basic maintenace for this particular model. Hopefully this will help you figure out the correct installation, and other maintenance work you can do yourself.

If you are looking at the belt while the vacuum is in the upright and locked position, the belt will be loose. The idler removes tension so the brush doesn't spin while you walk away and put heat marks in the carpet. Hit the lever that allows you to move the handle low, like you are vacuuming under the bed, and the belt gets tight.
Take the bottom plate off where you would install a new belt. the impeller is clogged up. use a wire to poke out the clogs. you can use a shop vac to **** out the debris. check your belt for wear spots while your at it. you may need a new one . befor removing the belt. make sure you notice in what direction it is installed. If you put it on backwards you brush will turn in the wrong direction,not good. draw a picture if need be. Ok good luck DFD
There should be a belt tensioner for the V belt, maybe it is not contacting the belt when you tilt the handle back. If this is less then 1 year old, then it is under warranty, take it in to a warranty servicer for warranty repair.
what is the belt # you have installed (generic)? Yes, there are problems with using generic belts on Hoover Vacuums. If you have noise I would suspect the roller, and replace it. the cost is about $25 and is something that you can install. The newer type are mande of wood and are very quiet.

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
The reason it seems like the belt is too big is probable correct, you may have the wrong size belt for your vacuum, use genuine belts – your particular model is a self propelled model and takes two (2) belts and they should stretch on very tightly and snug and it is smart to use the genuine belt package for the model that you have and we Recommended the belt change for flat belt(s) are 4 to 6 months for better cleaning
