Question about AcerPower 1000 (AP1000EA380M) PC Desktop

No 12 volt power output from my acerpower 1000 motherboard

I bought this computer with the problem. And it looks as if someone has changed some of the electoletic caps on the board. When you boot up into bios it shows there is no 12 volt output from the supply. Of course this mini desktop uses a 19 volt brick power unit so the MB has to regulate it to 12 volts for the fan and the hard drive.

This seems to have a motherboard none too dissimilar to that of a laptop. It's hard enough to get information on a typical desktop motherboard, and those for laptops are even more obscure. You are not however dead in the water yet. The power supplies usually have fuses on the board, they are usually either blue or green, sometimes have a little "hourglass" on them. You can check them with an ohmmeter. If you're lucky, there's one blown from an earlier fan or drive problem. Hope you can find it and a replacement.

As technology for personal computers advanced, hardware components needed more power.
The motherboard wasn't able to deliver the power needed, so the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable, was brought out.

More power was needed later.
Hardware components demanded more power, than a 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable could deliver.

So the 8-pin EPS +12 Volt power cable was brought out,

It CONNECTS to the motherboard. (For motherboards that use one)
NOT to be confused with the 8-pin PCI Express power cable,

This power cable plugs into a GRAPHICS CARD, not the motherboard. Note the color code of the wires.

For a PCI Express expansion slot on the motherboard, for a graphics card; the best the PCI Express slot can deliver is 75 Watts.

The 6-pin PCI Express power cable was brought out next,

It is plugged into the graphics card too, and can deliver up to an additional 75 Watts.
Now there is 150 Watts available for the graphics card.

Computer technology advanced, and the 6-pin PCI Express power cable, couldn't deliver the power needed.

Now comes the 8-pin EPS +12 Volt power cable.

The 8-pin EPS +12 Volt power cable by itself, can deliver up to an additional 150 Watts.

Now there is 225 Watts available for a graphics card.
75 Watts from the motherboard, 150 Watts from the 8-pin EPS +12 Volt power cable.

Color code of wires;
1) Orange = 3.3 Volts
2) Red = 5 Volts
3) Yellow = 12 Volts
ALL are DC Voltage

(Two flashlight batteries produce 3 Volts DC)

4) Black wires are Ground wires. Also are known as Negative wires.


This motherboard happen to have a manufacturer name, and Model Number?

How about the computer manufacturer name, and model number, it came out of?

The model number for a desktop computer, is on the back of the computer, next to the Windows product key; or up on the side of the computer tower.

(The plastic front of a desktop computer is the Front Panel.
Some older computers had a Door in the Front Panel.
The door is opened, and you look inside -> Down, for the model number)

My motherboard (intel DG41WV) is starting but not giving output to screen. I have cheked cables sokets. Even i have cheked to other screen. but problem is still. all peripherals (fan, cd-rom...etc) are...


Jumpers:
Motherboard installed in computer case;

A) Keyboard Jumper Block

3-pin jumper block, Top of motherboard/ left side. Near the mounting hole, and 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable connector,

GENERAL example of a 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable, and it's respective connector on the motherboard,

[ This power cable MUST be plugged into the motherboard.
It is power for the Intel processor ]

3-pin jumper block.
Starting at the TOP coming down;
Pins 3, 2 and 1.

Jumper cap should be on Pins 2 and 3.
(Enables the Keyboard wake-up feature. Factory default setting is Enabled. Pins 2 and 3)

B) Clear CMOS Jumper Block.

BOTTOM right corner of motherboard. 3-pin jumper block.
It is to the Left of the bottom/left SATA connector.
It is immediately to the Right of the motherboard mounting hole.

Starting at the Top, and going down towards the bottom edge of the motherboard;
Pins 3, 2, and 1.

Jumper cap should be on Pins 1 and 2.

When you changed the SMPS, do you KNOW for a fact it is a good one?
Did you plug the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable, into the motherboard?

What COMS setting/s did you change?
I would go back into BIOS Setup, and set that menu screen back to the factory default settings.

How do i tell if my acer computer has a bad power supply or motherboard, without buying a new power supply first?


The chicken and the egg comes to mind here!
Does the cpu fan come on? CPU 5 Volts is on
Can you open and close the DVD draw? 5 Volts is on
Does the Hard drive spin up? 12 Volts is on

Do the lights work on the keyboard? POST has completed.
Does the hard drive light work? CPU is on

Not sure what else to suggest but Power Supplies are not that expensive and fairly universal.

I am looking at a Dell Dimension 4550 PC for a friend and it won't boot up...i push the power button on and there is an almost orange/greenish light on the power button... no beeps no diagnostic lights are...


Bad Power Supply. Weak voltage power rail.

[There are three main voltages produced by the Dimension 4550's Power Supply.
1) 3.3 Volts
2) 5 Volts
3) 12 Volts ]

The Power On button LED functions as a diagnostic light also.

Left-click on Solving Problems, then click on Power Problems

The Power Supply is just an ATX form factor version. The common Power Supply form factor used in MANY desktop computers.
(ATX form factor for a Power Supply refers to the size, and shape of the Power Supply's case.
Approximately 6 inches Wide, 5.5 inches Long, and 3-1/2 inches Tall)

HOWEVER, (Not shouting), there is an area of concern, should you try a Power Supply you may have available for a test, or purchase one.

It involves the wiring of the 20-pin ATX main power cable. More specifically the power cable's connector.

To explain view the standard wiring, set for a 20-pin ATX main power cable's connector,

Looking at the photo to the far right, observe the color code of the wires, going down into the socket holes of the connector.

Look at the Lock tab on the side of the connector. This will help you orient the color code of the wires, and their placement in the socket holes, to the chart below the photos.

The connector on the end of the 20-pin ATX main power cable, is a Male connector.
Where the wires go into the connector, is the Back of the connector.
In the middle photo you can see the Front of the connector.

The wires going down into the ATX main power cable's connector, end in a female metal terminal.
The connector on the motherboard, (Shown in the photo to the Left), has Pins.
The metal female terminals go over the Pins.

The pins are numbered. The color code of the wires match up to the pins.
This is shown in the chart.

Now look at Dell Support > Dimension 4550 > Technical Overview > DC Power Connectors >

The illustration may not be accurate. You'll have to compare since you have the computer, and Power Supply in front of you.

For a time period Dell was a Proprietary manufacturer.
Meaning they wanted THEIR parts used on THEIR computers, and ONLY THEIR parts.
They had the motherboard manufacturers make motherboards according to their specs.

One of the specifications was that the pins would be CHANGED around, in the motherboard connector for the ATX main power cable.

They also had Power Supply manufacturers make the ATX power cable to their specifications.

This means if a user bought an aftermarket Power Supply, the color code of the wires in the ATX main power cable would Not match.

Many users did buy an aftermarket Power Supply, and installed it.
Burnt motherboards, fried Processors, and graphics cards, resulted.

Orange wires are 3.3 Volts
Red wires are 5 Volts
Yellow wires are 12 Volts.
Black wires are Ground wires.

Guess what happens when you plug a 12 Volt wire into where a 3.3 Volt, or 5 Volt, or Ground wire is supposed to Be?
POOF!

My suggestion would be to look for a Power Supply that is an ATX form factor, is KNOWN to be good, and is compatible, for a test unit.
You, or someone you know may have upgraded to a better computer, and you may be able to borrow the Power Supply for a test unit.

Compatible:
Has the Correct power cables.
1) 20-pin ATX main power cable, OR a 20/24-pin ATX main power cable.
(20-pin connector that has an additional connector with 4 pins. Just use the 20-pin)

2) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable. (Also referred to as P4 MB, and P4 ATX 12V)

(Power for the Processor)

3) Enough standard 4-pin Peripheral power cables.
(Misnomered as Molex)

Also:
You can change the power wires around in the ATX main power cable's connector.
Change them around, in an aftermarket Power Supply's ATX main power cable's connector.

Hi! Try to go to bios menu via F2 or del while system is starting up.Go to sata operation, change IDE to AHCI or vice versa, save settings then try to reinstall os(win xp) again via booting to the disc (F12) and choose cd/dvd or odd...hope this helps...Cheers!!!

its a bad or not seated correctly ship on the motherboard...could be RAM chip-check that all is seated securely

All power adapters usually have a label on the bottom of the adapter that show voltage and current for both the input and output connector, unless that label has been removed. Your KVM switch may have the voltage and current requirements printed on a label on the bottom of the device.
