Question about Standard (CRT) Televisions

1 Answer

KV35S42 According to the tag in the back this was built July 2000; purchased by us sometime first of the year 2001 from Best Buy; over the last couple weeks this thing has started blinking off and on (lasting a second or so - no sound loss) it started doing this gradually now it does it quite often as much as 15 times in any given period - several times during a 12 hrs period - I've also noticed the picture color getting more orangy. Any suggestions what can fix this or is this TV a loss and just a matter of time before I'm looking at a totally black screen

Re: KV35S42

Classic bad picture tube! End of natural life for that make/Model.

The  current sensing circuit is turning the video on/off.

The orangey look also indicates CRT no good.......T.

5 blinks - check the 5v SOS D Board since the set is a plasma.

Your best best is to obtain a quote from an authorised Panasonic service centre on the likely cost to replace that board if required, then you can make a decision afterwards - to either go ahead with the repair, or cut your losses and purchase a new set if the latter option turns out to be cheaper.

Always ask about and insist on extended warranties whenever you buy a new TV such as plasmas. These will cover you against expensive repairs, and having to buy a new one each time the old one breaks down in the future.

These days manufacturers lean toward board replacement in plasma and LCD TVs rather than individual components, as it is quicker and easier to replace a whole board than to try and fix an old faulty one. It's also tidier in terms of layout.

Magnavox 19" TV shuts itself off.....won't stay on

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps

Which is better between plasma and LCD or even OLED/LED?

Panasonics appear to be the best, along with Sony and Samsung. Stay away from Philips tv's along with the other obscure brands. Philips tv's seem to be built to last about a year or two and then go out, the most common problems being not turning on [typically on their plasmas.] Philips doesn't like to send parts to their service center. The off brand tv's don't usually have parts available. There is a reason for the low price. U get what U pay for. Philips has been the biggest ripoff due to their high prices for their short lasting tv sets.

Hi, I have a Panasonic W32D2DP its about 5 years old. It worked fine until about 3 weeks ago. It started cutting off and going to standby. It worked fine after for a few more hours, then would do it...

It's going to be cheaper to buy a new TV. Once you get this problem solved, another one will pop up. The parts for a TV that's 5 years old are not going to be cheap. Most TV repair shops stop carrying parts after 4 years, & the manufacturer stops making them after 7-10 years. With a semi-major purchase like a TV, it's best to purchase an extended warranty. ipmart. com offers a cheap repair manual. You'll be suprised how expensive repair shops can be when it involves "out-of-warranty" work.

Did the technician replace the thermal sensors too? I think there are a few, one is in the color wheel cover. I'd suspect that it could take 40 min. to heat a faulty sensor to the trip point, and that this could make the TV turn the lamp off.

Sony Triniton worked fine, turned it off and now it won't come back on.

The power supply, and or one of the scan amplifiers has a problem.

I have serviced these for defective horizontal output transitors, and the flyback failing. When this happens, most of the time the power supply had to also be serviced. There are number of support components that can cause the failure in the first place.

The set will have to be serviced by an experienced service tech.

Toshiba 32" HDTV 2002

The power regulators are famous for going bad. The big problem with this TV set is that unless you use the exact regulator from Toshiba, this set will fail time and time again. Even if the regulator IC has the exact same number, it will not hold up. We used to have a shop that was authorized by Toshiba, and we seen this problem many times when customers would say that they had their TV fixed by some local shop and the same problem occured several times. Good Luck
