Question about Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Camera

Zoom Browser EX software always fails to install on my Sony Vaio laptop

I bought a new Canon SD1000 Powershot camera and am trying to install the drivers.  I did have an SD110 up until yesterday, which worked fine with this laptop. Just after the installation gets started, I get a message that the installation has failed, and that I should try again.  Then I try to uninstall and it won't even let me do that.  It tells me that this program can't be installed on my computer.  I tried the installation on my wife's computer and it works fine, so maybe something on my computer is corrupted.  Is there a way I can tell what the problem might be?

I have not had a problem installing or uninstalling the camera itself, only the Zoom Browser EX software. Can that be done using Device Mananger? It's a software problem, and now the installer is actually failing almost immediately after it starts, likely a problem with some settings on my computer. Am I doomed to have to reinstall Windows? Please help!

Reading wht you are saying I agree that the problem is not the camera, cable, CD, etc... but your PC.
I assume you wife's computer is also running on Windows XP.
Can you verify that you have the administrator rights on your computer? Go under Start, Settings, Control Panel, User Accounts and be sure that close to your name is saying Administrator like in this example Zoom Browser EX software always fails to install o - 1ebbf22.gif Another things to verify is that you don't have The Windows firewall blocking your application, again go under Control Panel and temporary disable it.
Last but not least use the ZoomBrowser 5.8 or higher.
Let me know the result.

Right click "my computer", click properties, Go to hardware tab, click device manager,  when your camera is hooked up via USB it should be listed under usb ,or something to that effect. right click and uninstall.

It's very hard to troubleshoot software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. But why put up with the headaches of bad software in the first place? Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:

Canon PowerShot A40

If you have a Vista, it is not compatible. It will not download the Zoom browser. I had to purchase a Memory card reader/writer to download pics on my laptop from my camera and by passing the printer.

Zoom changes when camera turns on and camera is blocked

the only option really for it is service. you do have a 1 year warranty so long as you have a receipt / warranty card. you could just play with the zoom lever a little to see if it frees up
