Question about Compaq Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I can't get the display from my laptop to project to a screen.

I don't have the manual for my Compaq Presario R3000. I have it connected to an Epson Powerlite 51C/71C multimedia projector. I get a display on my laptop but none on the projection screen.

Yes, it's connected to the blue 15 pin connector at the back of the computer.

I had been powering up the projector first and then the computer but still couldn't get a picture on the screen. I then pressed the Fn key and nothing happened but then pressed the F4 key and the picture came up on the projector screen after about 5-10 seconds. I hope when I try again on Monday that it will go as smoothly.

What are the functions of the Fn key and the F4 key????

    Thanks for the help!

If you connect the data projector to your laptop and power it up first then your laptop, the video will switch to the data projector automatically.
If you had powered up the laptop first then you can divert the video information to the external video port/data projector by holding the Fn key and then press F4 key.
You can toggle between the LCD screen, the data projector or both LCD and data project together using the Fn & F4 keys.

You need to press and hold down the Fn key then press the F4 key.

The Fn key allows you to select the 2nd functions that are printed on the F1 to F8 keys.

The F4 key has a square screen symbol printed on the key. This key allows you to toggle between the LCD screen and the external video port which you have attached the data projector, as I explained previously.

Dark display

Do you have another screen attached? This will cause this trouble. If not, if you look closely at the screen, can you see an image? You might be able to shine a light into the screen and see an image. If so, sounds like the inverter is or has died. Try tapping the bottom plastic on the screen when the laptop is on and see if it flickers. If it does perhaps it is a loose connection/solder joint on the inverter board.

Compaq Presario R3000 dim screen but not dark

Sounds like the auto-dim in the BIOS is set too low. Fortunately the Compaq R3000 allows you to adjust the brightness right from the keyboard. Hold down the [FN] function key while tapping the [F8] key will brighten the screen, while [FN]-[F7] will dim it. The settings are different for running on AC power and battery, so you must do each individually.

Compaq Presario R3000 PC

Hi Tom,
It appears without looking at the laptop you have removed or dislogged the cable that goes between the motherboard and the screen. This is not hard to do they are very delicate. The only thing you can do is take it to a qualified service tech. i get these periodically in my shop too. Check the cable before you do so to see if you can reconnect it but be very carefull.
Be mucho blessed,
Mark
