Have you tried cleaning the plug or a new one. Try removing the plug, reconnect it to the wire and placing the thread part of the plug against the 'fins'. This will make the engine easier to pull and to see if spark is jumping the gap. If there's no spark, take the plug off and hold the connector about an 1/8 " from the fins and see if spark jumps. If not, the armature (ign. coil) may be bad. Before you change the armature though, check that the wire from the armature (terminal underneath) to kill switch is not grounding out. Information overload? lol

New spark plug, cleaned air filter, won't start, used starting fluid, how do I check spark?

unscrew spark plug . plug cap back on and hold it against engine and pull cord. plug should give healthy blue spark. if orange the little elbow contact on bottom of plug should be adjusted by tapping it lightly to close the gap between electrodes. do not hold plug by its body when pulling starter rope or ignition. if u can smell petrol on plug then ur engine is flooded.

I hit a tree root and the mower will not start now, any suggestions?

The first thing you need to confirm is that the engine is still turning over properly. Remove the spark plug and pull the cord several times to make sure you have gone through all cycles. Everything feel and sound normal? If not, you could have bent a valve when the motor stopped so suddenly. Turn the mower over, with the spark plug still out and carefully rotate the blade by hand. Turn ok? If yes then the next step would be to ensure that you have spark. Hold the spark plug wire close to the engine block and pull the cord. If ignition system is working you should see a spark jump from the wire to the block. You can also buy testers that attach to the spark plug wire and glow if there is proper spark. If you do not have spark then the violent stop may have either broken a wire on damage the magneto. If you have spark then next step is to ensure that engine is getting fuel. Put a little fuel directly into the spark plug hole, put the plug back in and try to start it. If it starts for a second and then stops then fuel supply is the problem.

Won't start,charged oil,cleaned spark plug and air filter.has gas.

If your tiller has sat for any length of time it may have stale gas and the spark plug may need replacing (not just cleaning). Always make sure all wiring and or connections are clean. You can check for spark by removing spark plug, insert it back into spark plug wiring, using a WOOD clothes pin to hold the wire, hold spark end of spark plug (holding the clothes pin only) on metal casing on machine, pull starter cord and check for spark. If you don't use a non conductive instrument such as the clothes pin you will get a nasty shock. If you have no spark it is time to change the plug. Always put your safety first! Hope this helps! Have a great day! If this doesn't work perhaps you will need more information.

STARTING PROBLEMS ?? For a gas engine to start basically you need two things..fuel delivery and good spark....remove the spark plug ...Is it wet with gas??IF YES good you have fuel going into the cylinder.BUTwhat about spark?..Put the plug back in Pull the plug wire use a wooden closepin to hold the wire real close to the top of the sparkplug and have someone pull thr cord you should see little sparks jumping from the metal connector on the end of the plug wire to the sparkplug if you have spark.. if you have both fuel and spark maybe you have bad gas??You could try shooting a little starting fluid[ether] into the sparkplug hole screw the plug back in and try starting again..Goodluck RW...

Just started the other day. now pulling cord and nothing happening . tried spraying starter fluid in carb. no luck

First make sure it has gas, i know it sounds obvious, but everyone has made that mistake.

Second remove the spark plug. While it is plugged into the wire, but outside the engine, use insulated pliers to hold the tip near a piece of metal on the engine. Have someone else pull the cord and see if a spark jumps from the spark plug to the engine. You have to hold it pretty close (1/8-1/4 of an inch) but make sure it isn't touching. If there is no spark you should buy and install a new one. You can get a replacement at your local auto parts store, just bring the old one with you.

Troy bilt tuff cut 200. Will not started.. started fine the other day. pulling cord and will not turn over. already tried spraying starter fluid in carb... it is roughly a 2004

The first things you should check if your mower wont start is fuel, air and spark. Try pulling the cord a few times and then pull out the spark plug. If it looks wet then its getting fuel. Plug the spark plug into the wire while its outside the mower and hold it very close to a piece of metal attached to the engine without touching the metal (use insulated pliers). Have someone else pull the cord and see if you have sparks jumping between the plug and the engine. Also remove the air filter and clean it with gasoline if its made out of foam or buy a replacement if its made out of paper.

Let me know if none of these things work.

Won't start, small engine guy said carburator needed to be flushe

Hi lackeyapda:
Fire Air Fuel

Remove the spark plug, plug it back into its wire. Hold it close to the metal frame WITH INSULATED PLIERS. Pull the cord and see if you get a spark. If no it is the coil, plug wire or a safety switch. If yes
put it back together. Take the air filter off. Spray some "easy start" or "carb cleaner " into the carburetor. Try starting. If it starts for a moment then dies, you do need to clean your carb.

Cannot start my Comet pressure washer...water runs thru fine. Had set choke to open (push to left) and start to left.

Hi: Some things to check: Is the gas old or contaminated with water. Change it if you are unsure. Are you getting a spark? To check this: BE CAREFUL. Remove the plug. Plug it back into its wire. Hold it WITH INSULATED PLIERS so the tip is close to the metal frame of the machine and have someone pull the starter cord. The plug should spark.

Car wont start. have fuel. how do i check for spark?

There are several ways.
One - pull a plug - ground base to engine with a good clip lead or wire.  Crank engine and look for spark.  This works best at dusk or in low light condition.
Second - Look in JC Whitney - they have a device that plugs into the spark plug on one side and the wire on the other.  In between there is a clear tube where you can see the spark in working.
Third - pull plug - use a screw driver in the end of the wire and hold close to a grounded point such as a engine bolt.  You should be able to pull a spark when you get close enough without actually touching.
If you can't find a spark at all look at the ingnition control module.  They have a tendancy to go bad over time.

Hope that helps,

Doug
