Question about Goodman CKL42AR42 Air Conditioner

OUTSIDE UNIT OPERATES BUT FAN DOESN'T TURN AND UNIT DOESN'T COOL.

I HAVE A GOODMAN CKL42-1B OUTSIDE A/C UNIT. IT WORKED FINE LAST SUMMER BUT WHEN WE TRIED TO RUN IT THIS YEAR THE FAN WON'T TURN AND IT MAKES A LOUD NOISE. I BELIEVE THIS NOISE BEGINS WHEN THE FAN IS SUPPOSED TO KICK ON. THERE IS ALSO A FAINT SMELL OF BURNING WIRES OR SOMETHING. HOW CAN I DETERMINE WHETHER THE FAN IS BAD? ARE THEIR FUSES THAT I CAN CHECK?

The motor could just be locked in place from sitting...take a stick or something and try to see if it spins be sure of rotation! you can also give it a little nudge while it is on and it will take off! if this happens then you have a bad start compacitor but no there are no fuses that only protect the motor!

I just had the same problem with mine and I just had to buy a new run capacitor. The part that goes to the motor was shot, so the motor started to smoke a little. (no permanent damage because my wife saw it and immediately shot off the unit. I also am buying a "hard start" unit that hooks to the capacitor for when the voltage might be low to the unit. This will help prolong the life of the unit. I bought it from ALBRO for $14.50. I think it's well worth it. Sometimes the contacts get corroded during the winter months and it's just a matter of cleaning them off. Do not try this yourself without discharging the capacitor because the capacitor is very dangerous unless discharged.

Fan shuts off when weather cools down

Some units use an outside temp sensor to control the outdoor fan for cooling for better operation and will shut off the outdoor fan when it gets cool outside.

Due to the many different questions I see about Air Conditioning, I am including this overview to help us better understand each other for trouble shooting. A basic air conditioning system has a Thermostat, Air Handler or Furnace Fan and a Condensing unit. In a split system, the condensing unit (Condenser) is separate from the furnace and usually in the back yard. When working properly, it blows hot air. It connects to the cooling part of the system by 2 copper lines. One large line and 1 small line. The part that cools the house is the "Evaporator" and is usually on top of the furnace inside the square metal box (Plenum). When the Air Conditioner is running, the large copper line should be cold and the smaller line should be warm. Common signs of low refrigerant are that both lines are the same temperature and/or frost or ice has built up on the large line at the condenser. The thermostat will normally display room temperature on till it is touched to change the setting. It could have a "Span" setting as well as times and temperatures. The operating "span" of MOST residential thermostats is 40 to 90 degrees. That means you can set it as low as 40 degrees and no higher than 90 degrees. It probably has a fan switch also. When in the "ON" position, the fan will run constantly, 24 / 7, but the condenser will still cycle on and off as needed to keep the house at set point. If you have a suggestion to include in this paragraph, please let me know.

I think I have it covered above. Let me know if you need something more specific. Thank you. Roger

Heat pump not cooling

You may have a bad running capacitor on the outdoor unit. It is a round or oval can with three sets of prongs on it. Over time they can either become weak or swell due to an overload.

You have a 10 year warranty on your AC. Call a Goodman rep and have it serviced. It will probably be a bad compressor capacitor. Bad wire or no refrigerant.

You may have a problem with the board or the motor, as there is a separate speeds for heating and cooling. I would call a competent, NATE certified technician to daignose this properly.

My AC unit keeps freezing up on the copper lines going into the house from the outside unit. It also freezes up on the inside lines and the air is not cooling my home down.

Operate your air conditioner with the fan in the on position. But first turn the fan on, turn the temp up or shut the cooling off. Your coil is more than likely frozen over. At night when outside temperature drops the refrigerant pressure and temperature in the system also drops. This action can cause icing of the cooling coil, with the fan in automatic everything shuts down at the end of a cooling cycle. Thus no air movement to melt ice on previous cooling cycle.
