!Precautions/Disclaimer - PLEASE READ!

Whenever you do any work on elecrical equipment always remember: Disconnect the power cord from the wall socket, discharge the remaining electric charge (Power the unit on with the cord disconnected) and always be extremely careful around circuit boards, DON'T touch the exposed circuitry. It might contain lethal electricity! Always read the device specific safety precautions! Do these things on your own responsibility, refer to a qualified technician if you feel unsure about any of the safety precautions. I don't take any responsibility of death or injury! Keep children and animals away from the opened/broken equipment!

On to the issue, EX-Change or mechanical error, tray won't open:

Usually this kind of behaviour is because the drive belts are worn/streched, thus the unit tries to open the tray, but nothing happens, so it displays the error text.

There are three main reasons for this:

-Worn and loose drive belts (usually 2x different sized)

-Broken teeth or displacement in one of the gears

  • Disconnect power cable from the wall socket and make sure the unit is safe to operate on (try to power on with the power cord disconnected) wait for about 30 minutes

  • Open the top cover (usually attached to the unit with 4-6 screws on both sides and 2-5 screws on the backside

  • Don't touch the exposed circuit board, lethal electricity might still be present!

  • What you want to look at, is the top area where the cd-changer mechanism is.

  • Check the drive belts for any loosenes (should be minimal)

  • Check the gear mechanism for any loose gears or broken teeth

  • Check the sensors for grease/dust blocking

  • Gently open/close the tray by hand, rotate the revolving tray

  • Finally if everything checks out, power on the unit while it is open, DON'T TOUCH ANY INTERNAL PARTS! ONLY OPERATE THE FRONT PANEL! KEEP OTHERS AWAY FROM THE EQUIPMENT! RISK OF ELECTROCUTION!

The tray is usually locked by the cd-player mechanism that goes up and down, it should move by hand to unlock the mechanisms.

If the belts have a lot of slack in them, you can try to cross them over (shortening by 2x), or get new ones from a radio repair shop/tech. This usually fixes the issue.

If the gears are broken or dislodged, you can try to dismantle the gear unit and turn the broken gear (so that the broken part is not in use) or put the dislodged gear in place. Sometimes a plastic axle is broken and can be replaced with a small screw (drill a small hole and fit a screw in it). You can try to look for spare gears from a radio repair shop/tech, usually hard to come by.

Sorry for the long picture-less how-to, but safety first and more is more :D

Sony MHC-GZR888D : Error C 31 00 & tray not opening

Either its disc loading motor, or the loading belt has the fault. Visit this site for more details. Type in the site name "Electro-help" either Google or Yahoo search box [not in the address bar of your browser], and click search. It is an electronic equipments service help site. All details you want are there. Note the position of hyphen in between words in site name, when you type it in. The site will appear as it is in web; subtitled as Service help to electronic home entertainement equipments.

Pull up older posts. You can get all details.

Site is listed in Google, and you can locate it either at the bottom part of first search page, or at the top of second page.

Click on associated ads too. Sometimes, it might help you.

Sometimes, the disc loading mechanism might need replacement. If so, contact the nearest authorised service center for Sony. The Sony disc loading mechanism can't be bought from open electronic spare part market.

In mhc gzr88d no function works after i am trying to connect it to sony tv.now the tray not opening.it shows only "reading".after that it flashes the error code C 31 00,

The Tv has a hot chassis and anything connected to it will be damaged especially the compact book shelf system.and boomboxes. Unplug stereo and all attached cords for 60 seconds and at the same time press and hold the power button for the same time in hopes to reset the processor ic, if this works consider yourself lucky, if it fails! you will need to decide to buy or repair the stereo, "may not be repairable"

My sony stereo MHC EC55 does not recognize that there is a disc in the tray. I cannot play CDs.

The solution was to blow our the tray with a compressor. It worked. Then it recognized the disc and functions just as it did before. This saved me a lot of money and time.

DEST ERROR CODE

There is a problem with the mechanical loading mechanism of the CD portion. The unit is unable to complete its "startup" sequence. You will need to rebuild the CD loading mechanism. You should purchase the service manual for the instructions on how to rebuild this.
