Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

1 Answer

Throttle doesn't work properly

Craftsman 17hp I removed the carburetor (not the linkage), and now it appears tne throttle doesn't work properly (seems like it is reversed). I did not touch the governor control lever or throttle cable. In addition, initial start of the engine takes approximately 15-20 seconds of cranking before starting. Any suggestions? Also, does anyone know where to find a detailed diagram showing where the choke and governor links hook into as well as the governor spring?

I found the manual, but diagram only illustrates parts, not how they are to look when assembled and connected. Any other suggestions?

Check the throttle cable connection at the carburetor throttle linkage, it (cable) may be broken or the carburetor linkage is broke.

Briggs and Stratton 17HP Intek Governer Overspeeds

Can you Regulate the Engine Speed Using the Governor Arm? If Yes, then Reset the Governor. **To Reset the Governor; Loosen the Governor Arm Bolt and Turn the Governor Shaft Clockwise Until it Stops. Using the Governor Arm Hold the Carburetor to Full Throttle. Now with the Shaft Full Clockwise and the Governor Arm and Carburetor Held at Full Throttle, Tighten the Governor Arm Bolt. If the Engine Still Runs Full Throttle, then Reverse the Rotation of the Governor Shaft, but Still Hold the Carburetor at Full Throttle with the Governor Arm. If it Still Runs at Full Throttle, then Check the Internal Governor.** If you Can Not Regulate the Engine Speed Using the Governor Control Arm, then Check the Carburetor Throttle Valve. If the Throttle Control Valve (sometimes called a Flap or Plate) Mounting Screws Came Out of the Control Valve, then you will have No Control Over the Engine Speed. Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. **The Throttle Cable Attaches to the Throttle Control Bracket. The Cable Moves a Slide that Moves a Pivot. The Pivot has the Spring Attached to it and to the Governor Arm. The Solid Link Connects to the Governor Arm and goes to the Throttle Shaft on the Carburetor. When the Throttle Cable is Moved it Moves the Pivot and the Pivot Pulls the Spring. The Spring Pulls the Governor Arm and the Governor Arm Moves the Throttle Shaft. Usually the Spring is in the Lower Hole in the Governor Arm and the Solid Link is in the Top Hole of the Governor Arm.** If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens

Do anyone have a drawing for the throttle to carburetor linkage on a Craftsman 358.797931 leaf blower?

This is the only picture I could find of the breakdown of your machine showing the throttle linkage. You can zoom in on it, but its still hard to make out. I hope this is of some help.

17hp kawasaki idels fine but when you throttle up it runs wide open just put governor in

Eric, the one thing I can think of is that either your linkages are incorrect, by that I mean it sounds as if then you throttle it up, it gets stuck open... I would go over the carburetor set up and make sure that everything is correctly back in its right order.. you may also have the governor set too high, adjust it lower if it sounds as though the engine is working too hard or screaming.

Craftman model 917.271920 run at high speed at the time.even with the throttle in idle position

If a cable operated throttle the far end of the cable may have broken or come off. Linkage between throttle cable and carburetor bent/broken/
missing, spring broken/missing. Shouldn't be too serious.

Sounds like snow blower has been sitting since last season. Remove carburetor shield and move throttle linkage at top of carburetor. They some times seize or tighten up from sitting.Spray with WD-40 or something to lubricate.

Toro rider 16-38 HXL when I start it revs at FULL speed and sounds like it will blow up. I slow it down with choke all other linkage seems to be in place properly- Is there a trick to fixing?

Three options:

1. The carburetor throttle plate (closest to the engine is stuck); clean it with gumout and work it back and forth

2. the linkage is hooked in the wrong hole ; check the wear pattern on the throttle shaft plate to see if it is in the wrong hole.

3. The govenor arm or gear is not adjusted properly; loosten the govenor arm, push the throttle plate of the carburetor all the way closed. push the govenor arm the same direction all the way until it bottoms out. tighten the arm clamp. Test again

I recommend getting a manual or at least a free parts diagram from a local shop like www.arcolawn.com

Good luck
Joe

please vote me up if the fix was good.

Craftsman 22hp 7500 zero turn mower 3years old.

Be careful - running ungoverned will quickly destroy the engine. Look at the carburetor throttle lever. There should be two linkages attached -- one from the manual throttle lever, another from the governor. The linkage to the governor is usually a spring. Perhaps that came off or broke, or a foreign object is wedged in there.
