Question about Gateway 700 X PC Desktop

1 Answer

Clicking sound, no video on power up

I bought some used pc parts recently, and among the parts was a Gateway 700X pc; it has a 2.0 P4 and 4x256mb rdram; I powered it up and got an error message at POST saying to reset the time, which I did; after doing this and powering down, I have not been able to get any video; also when powering on, the power button light flashes between green and orange, and there's a clicking sound, which goes away after about a minute or so; then it sounds like the hard drive engages, but still no video

thanks rulds2008 for the response; I replaced the battery before this posting, and tried 3 different video card, so unless all 3 cards are bad, those 2 can be ruled out; there are a couple of the caps that look a bit bulged, but can't see any signs of leakage; I think I may look for another m/b for it, if I can find one cheap

I want to add second hard drive to gateway 700X. what is the maximum size and RPM that the 700X can handle?

Your computer was most likely built circa 2002 so there is no limit on the capacity of the hard drive. As far as speed, the 7200 rpm hard drives are plentiful. I usually get my hardware at they have very competetive prices and ship fast...their website is easy to navigate for searches and they offer open box deals and free shipping. You should have at least 2 empty 3.5" bays to place a second drive, so go with any capacity you can afford.

Possible power supply or ram problem

before you tear into all that hardware stuff please first try this. Try start up in Safe Mode press F8. Choose Safe Mode, when at the choice window, to select either Safe Mode Desktop, OR System Restore, chooses system restore and choose a time before you had the "Problem" and follow instructions. This should get you back.

My Gateway 700x will not turn on, stays in sleep mode (yellow light). I have been told that it is the Power supply and cannot figure out how to get to it...

Effectively, that's the PS. Unless you do have electronics knowledge, don't attempt to fix it. You may end with a burning PC and a huge hospital bill.

Upgrading RAM on your Gateway 700X (DDR) Computer is easy, Gateway 700X (DDR) Computer takes the PC3200 DDR SDRAM DIMMs. Supports Dual Channel DDR. RAM Type, and comes installed with 512 MB (removable) of RAM.
You can upgrade your Gateway 700X (DDR) Computer to up to a maximum of 2.0 GB RAM, the Computer has 4 sockets to install RAM, already with 512 MB (removable) standard RAM installed. For best Computer performance use the maximum amount of allowed RAM per slot for your system.
