No spark 1996 McClaine lawnmower 5 hp GXV140 Honda engine has no spark , changed plug and checked oil lvl. I have no manual

I solved this. Pull the pull starter off top. 3 -10 mm nuts hold it on this one. Remove the gas tank. Good time to check the fuel line for any cracks or brittleness. This exposed the entire engine to work on. My flywheel was clean , no rust, and magnets felt strong. There were 2 wires coming from the magnito ( coil) I disconnected the small wire, this went to the dead man switch. Still had no spark. The other large wire goes to the spark plug. I removed spark plug and attached a wire with 2 large aligator clips to the plug threads and then to the engine cooling fin to ground the spark plug. I reattached the pull starter so I could turn the engine over fast. Still no spark. I removed the magnito (coil) . There were 3 small surfaces to the magnito , shaped like a horse shoe around a small box, that actually are set about .010 away from the flywheel. All 3 were completely covered with thick heavy rust. There was no rust on the flywheel. I used 100 grit sandpaper to remove the rust and hooked the magnito back on setting it with a soft matchbook cover. The matchbook cover was about .012. I figured close enough for now. I hooked the spark plug back onto the sparkplug wire and pulled the starter rope to see a bright blue spark jump the .030 sparkplug gap numerous times. I couldn't see this rust blocking the connection between magnito and flywheel until after I had removed the magnito. Hope this helps someone else.

Try sanding ends of magnito and check the wire from magnito to sparkplug and see if its broke.

Hi, first check the oil. If it smells like fuel, change the oil. Secondly if oil smells ok, check the valve clearances and adjust if incorrect. Let me know if the oil smells like fuel and I will help with a fix to stop it happening again. Regards Phil.

How to fix a 3.5 lawn mower?

HELLO,
You can fix these yourself, all you have to do is to follow the instructions below,
1 Remove the spark plug lead from the spark plug and move away from cylinder head. Always do this before attempting any repairs to a lawnmower.
2 If your lawnmower is a "four stroke" mower (separate gasoline and oil), tip the mower so that the spark plug is pointing skyward. Never tip it on its side with the spark plug to the ground.
3 If your lawnmower is "2 stroke" (oil and gasoline mixed) turn off fuel tap. You can tip a two stroke mower any way that is suitable to you.
4 To change a blade, or blade disc, it is often easier to remove the spark plug and feed a length of string into the cylinder head to 'lock' the piston while trying to un-do the blade bolt(s).
5 Check the motor's "air filter" while doing this sort of maintenance as a dirty or clogged air filter will affect engine performance and increase fuel consumption of your mower. Symptoms of a clogged air filter include inability to start, starting and quickly stopping after several sputters, or a weak idle. You may also see oily or smoky exhaust.
6 If your mower is a "four stroke" model, change the oil at least once a year. When it is tipped over with the spark plug in the air, is a good time to remove the "oil fill" plug and drain oil into an old ice-cream container for recycling.

I hope this will help to solve the problem.....

I have a honda o h c push lawnmower it starts easy but cuts out in about 30 secs

I have the GVC160 motor....same problems....just found this info (see link),...and it turned out that Honda used a NGK spark plug that was defective,....I couldn't believe that is all it was...after changing the carb (new),...adjusting valves....etc.. I just went down and bought a new spark plug.....and it runs great!!
----
BEFORE go thru all of the advice and look at most other Honda web info.....go and buy a brand new spark plug and start with that! It appears Honda used a NGK spark plug in the past that fails after some time....giving the syptoms of problems with the carb, sticky valve, etc. Do not try to clean and use the old spark plug!! Check this out....it was the answer I was looking for after hours of work, reading, and talking to Honda dealers - http://forum.doityourself.com/outdoor-power-equipment-small-engines/261743-honda-lawnmower-starting-then-cutting-out.html

Honda HRM215 lawnmower won't start. I am looking

Check for spark. Pull the plug and look at it. Make sure it isnt oil or fuel fouled.

Check the airpath and make sure the filter isnt blocked.

Check the fuel. Make sure you have clean gas in the float bowl. You can drain the carb without taking it off the mower. The bottom of the bowl should have a drain bolt in it. Remove the bolt completely and fuel free flow for a 30 seconds to make sure you chase off any water or dirt that may be in the bowl.

You may want to check compression. This mower is 19 years old and may be losing compression to the point where it wont draw enough fuel to run. Look for at least 100-110 PSI. Anything less you should consider adjusting the valve clearances to see if that helps. If not you probably need a new mower. Since repairs like this are very expensive.

I can't start my honda lawnmower, checked the oil, put new gas use choke,it gives litle sound but not enough to start

Try a touch of starting fluid right into the carburator by taking the air filter off. If it then starts but wont run or stay running, the reservoir below the carb should be removed to clean at and the pinhole in the intake tube above the bowl nut. This is the most common problem with lawnmower start problems, the pinhole can be unplugged with one wire from a wire brush. Be careful with the gas, at least pinch off the gas hose with a vise grips while removing the carb bowl.. Never use a droplight around gasoline. most lawnmowers have no mixture adjustments, so it is a matter of cleaning the carb, tank, gas lines. Some oils in gas mix systems settle and clog after less than one season. Spark can be tested by sight, remove the plug and use a clip-on ground wire from spark plug body to metal on the engine with the plug wire connected.

GXV140 Carburetor removal

The carb just slides off of the posts. The gaskets are holding it on and may tear when you pull it off. The linkages must be disconnected to get it off as well. There are two bolts on the throttle plate that can be removed so the plate can move to make disconnecting the linkages easier. Some people remove the posts by threading two nuts on and tightening them against each other so that the inner one can be turned to unscrew the post. That didn't work for me as both nuts still turned together.

Honda Pressure Washer HP 5 not starting

You can try spraying some carburetor cleaner into the carb. If it starts for a minute, your carburetor need cleaning. When you added new gas did you remove the old gas first? Is the air filter clean?

Honda GX340 11 Hp ..Runs fine until it gets hot , Cuts off and

FIRST...check the engine oil level. Some Honda engines have an oil sensor that shuts off the spark if the oil is low. This would also explain it shutting down when it get hot. Check the manual to see how to tell if the oil level is correct. Also, the oil should be brown and transparent, not black. It may need changing. Post again if this doesn't help :-)
