Question about Dell Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop
I have a Dell Dimension 5150 desktop PC which has developed an intermittent shut down problem the system will boot normally but after an indeterminate period it shuts down and restarts automatically. It may do this several times and then eventually it goes into a continuous reboot without ever attaining a complete restart. If I switch it off for a while I can eventually get the PC to reboot properly once more only for the problem to manifest itself once more.
My Dell 5150 Dimension P4 3.0 Ghz was doing the exact same thing. The problem is very common with this model. No PC clinic I took to can solve my problem. They said it's MB, it is not! The problem is due to insufficient cooling from the factory 120MM fan which draws little air. Here is how I fix it. Remove the plastic shroud that holds the heatsink by losening the 2 screws and unplug the fan wire from the MB. It should come off easily unless your heat sink compound has hardened. Thoroughly clean the Al heatsink/fan with a long bristals brush.( Optional: If you want, remove heatsink compound from cpu and HS and apply a thin even layer of Artic silver with your index finger covered with siran wrap). Buy an 80mm quiet fan (Sunnon or any good brand)with a large 4 pin connector and get 4X 1.5" 1/8' self tapping screws. Mount the fan so the bottom just clears the HS on the MB. Direction of air flow is away from HS. Look for the arrow on the fan If the screws won't tap into the al HS, squeeze the al plates closer. Don't over tighten the screws, it's al, it is soft. Install back hs/FAN , tighten the two green screws and clean inside of PC with brush on the outside of your house. Plug in the fans power. Fire it up leave in on for a week, your HS should be ice cold. Another solution is buy a newer Pentium dua1 core that uses 65W instead of the 95W chip from Dell. A good one is E5200 at C$80. In this case ,you dont't need the extra fan. To upgrade your PC with a non Dell MB is possible. Get a Zotac ITX MB 170MMX170MM . Some grinding maybe needed. One good one is Zotac NF610I-D-E MINI-ITX LGA775 GeForce 7050 DDR2 1PCI-E1 2SATA2 RAID LAN VGA Motherboard at C$65

That has to do with windows programs. Try doing a system back up if that doesn't work wipe the hard drive and put windows back on it. I have the same system and that has happened to Me. That is what I did. Now it works fine.
