New battery wont charge

New battery was charging normally, i have been using laptop on mains power and taken battery out to prevent continous charging. now laptop doesn't recognize the battery reffited.

The likely cause of the original battery fault is a very common mistake in the way laptops are used. A laptop battery, working at optimum efficiency, whether of the older Nickel Cadmium and Nickel Metal Hydride or newer Lithium Ion types, is meant to charge under power and then discharge under use, if it is to have a long and useful life. This means that it should be used in a similar way to a cellphone's battery - connected to mains electricity and charged up when low or flat and then disconnected from the power and used on battery power alone until the power level means the cycle needs repeating. Many people, however, unwittingly use their laptops like desktop PCs and leave the mains electricity permanently connected to it even after the battery is fully charged. The reason that people cite for doing this is 'convenience'. This, however, is a mistake.

Laptops have more flexibility than cellphones in that, if they are mainly used in one place rather than as mobile devices, then it is possible to charge the battery to full capacity, disconnect from the mains, then remove and keep the battery until the next time the laptop's mobility function is required (periodically recharge the stored battery if not in use for long periods of time because the charge slowly dissipates when not in use), reconnect the mains to the battery-less laptop and use it like that, ad infinitum.

When a laptop battery is fully charged, what it really wants to do is discharge. However, maintaining the mains connection prevents it from doing so. The Power Management
System on the motherboard is designed to cope with long periods of either battery powered or battery-less mains powered use, but not long periods of simultaneous battery + mains powered use. A fully charged battery still connected to mains electricity has no means of discharging and various power sensitive components such as the Power Inverter, Cold Cathode Backlight, LCD Panel, Graphics Chip and Motherboard Power Management Stystem can become damaged by the power bottleneck created.

Using the battery in this wrong way also gradually depletes the charging capacity of the cells, until eventually, the cells can carry no charge, meaning a dead battery. A dead battery, where the cells are depleted, left in the laptop with the mains connected, is even worse for the Power Managent System
because the flow of power to the motherboard via the dead battery cells is inefficient and intermittent, creating battery overheating, low CPU Cooling Fan speed, inferior cooling and consequent internal overheating hazards in addition to potential electrical damage to several components. When damage to the Motherboard Power Management System passes a certain point, even a new battery might not charge - the situation in which you now find yourself.

Loose DC jacks, leading to intermittent power drops and surges, are typically caused by the jack being allowed to take the weight of the heavy transformer box on the laptop's power cable. The solution is to ensure that the laptop is never held, carried or used with the transformer hanging unsupported. If the laptop is in use, the transformer should be disconnected, carried, placed on a desk or table near the laptop (if the cord is short) or laid completely full-weight-flat on the floor (if the cord is long enough). Also, a Surge Suppressor/Surge Protector should always be used between the mains power socket and all computer
equipment, rather than directly to the mains.

My Dell says it doesn't recognise my new battery, and tells me that I should press F1 and that it won't be able to charge it, but it then does appear to charge it ok, although the light at the...

You don't say which Operating System you use.

A new battery needs a good, long charge for only the first charge. After that, charge until it is fully charged. The battery charge icon at the bottom right of the screen, near the clock, will tell you the state of the battery, by floating the mouse over it. If you have no icon, right click on the Task Bar, bottom of screen > properties > notification area > tick 'power' > apply > ok.

Also, always use a Surge Suppressor/Surge Protector between the mains power socket and all Co

When battery cells are dead, a replacement battery is required and should be bought and installed as soon as possible. In the meantime, the old, dead battery should be removed and the laptop used (battetyless) on mains power alone.
Manage the new battery and the AC/DC Adapter in the way described above and you should hopefully avoid similar problems in future.

My battery kept telling me: consider replacing your battery. What does it mean? But she's continous charging and it work even if it unplugged.


Hi,
I think you have Windows 7 on you laptop. The Operating System continously monitors the charge holding capacity and starts warning well before time. The battery is still capable of holding charge and will give back-up and you dont have to replace it now. However, you may replace it when the back-up time would decrease considerably. Please not that upon every charge and discharge the charge holding capacity of the batteries decreases and ultimitately battery worns out and needs replacement. To enhance the battery life, it is recommended to run the laptop on AC power adaptor (if it is available) and in case of AC inavailability, dont drain the battery completely. Use the laptop on battery on battery only when extremely necessary.

My Acer Extensa 5420 laptop won't charge. I t works but when I plug in the power cord it does not even say it's plugged in and it doesn't charge. The charge light won't even light up. What can I do?


Check there is a light comming on the charger pack, if there is you will need a new connector piece for the end on the power cable that plugs into the power socket on the lap top, plug the wire into the laptop and give a little wiggle to see if you can get the charger light on the laptop to light up. If you do then it will be the power socket on the laptop mother board, this requires the whole laptop to be taken apart in order to resolder the socket, your better off taking it to your local pc repair shop for this repair.

Pasario 6500 laptop will not charge, charger is plugged in, turned on and laptop is running on mains power but it will not charge the battery


Most likely your battery stopped recharging. Depending on what type it is, and how old it is, it could be dead by now and needs replacing.
Most laptops can operate connected to their power supplies, even when the battery is taken out.
Some batteries need to be fully discharged for them to take a new charge and perform as new, up to a 1,000 times, according to their manufacturer's specs. Others have what's called a "memory effect". This prevents them from taking a full charge, especially when connected to the laptop almost 100% of the time, and using up some of their charge only ocassionally, when they are disconnected from their power supplies.
You can get replacement ones on eBay for less than the manufacturer's advertised price.

Upon power up, 3 red LEDs flashing rapidly continously, no power.


The control systems on power mobility equipment have a "prevent" circuit that immobilizes the equipment while it is plugged into a charger, so folks won't take off with it plugged into the wall outlet. When you turn it on when plugged into a charger, the display will flash constantly, or sweep constantly, depending on the manufacturer. This is normal. Your off-board charger should have a red light to indicate power to the charger, and another light for the charge status. Yellowish means it is charging, when it turns green, you are fully charged. If the status light is green all the time, that is an indication that the charger is not functioning properly, or that the batteries are below a chargeable state. Check charger output, which should be 26-28 volts dc, and each battery should show at least a 12 volt reading, but around 13.5 volts with a full charge. If one or both of the batteries drops below 12 volts after a short period of time, it's time for a fresh pair. Fully charge new ones before using the chair.

How long have you had the laptop as all batteries even rechargeable have a limited life span. Dell laptop batteries normally have a life span of 1 to 2 years, so you may need to buy a new one

how long have you had your laptop? the toshiba laptop battery can be normal used in 400-500 cycles, that means normal in 2 years. if the age is over 2 years, the battery declines day by day. get a new one if it is unnormal

Battery wont work


The battery is dead and it won't charge or hold its charge (all rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles). You need to buy a new battery, or just use the laptop connected to the mains supply.
