Trying to change the drive belt on a GTX 2446 Troy Bilt garden lawn mower rider can't get the pulley upper plate of the motor

You must remove the electric PTO clutch in order to remove the motion drive belt. Also it probably require you remove the bolts holding transmission if your going and secondary drive so can it off and on.

Remove pto

Assuming it is the electric PTO you are asking about, they are mounted to the bottom of the crankshaft. There is 1 bolt up thru the center. Find the power wires running to it, and unplug them, should be fairly close to the pto. Then take out the bolt, and the clutch should then slide down and off. You may have to remove the mower deck to get good access.

Remove clutch

I'm assuming you're referring to the PTO clutch on the bottom of the engine shaft. There's a 5/8" bolt that goes up through the clutch into the shaft. Remove it, but then turn it back in about 10 turns and use a wheel puller to start getting it off. You might have to c-clamp the PTO/clutch top and bottom together to get both pieces off. Once the assembly starts coming down the shaft, you can probably remove the wheel puller, remove the bolt completely, and pull the PTO/Clutch off by hand. Be sure to unplug the PTO/clutch before removing it. Also, many of these have a spacing washer on top of the PTO/Clutch that comes off in the process. BE SURE to put it back on before replacing the PTO/Clutch. DO NOT hit anything with a hammer to try to break it loose - you'll most likely NOT get the part off and most probably WILL damage necessary parts.

Installation of motor drive belt on cub cadet tractor

This one's a PITA. That said, I had to remove the PTO clutch and pulley, the seat, the brake and transmission pedals, and finally the sheet metal that constitutes the fenders and foot plates.

Belt is put over the fan above the transmission and onto the pulley there, then run along bottom of main frame towards the front until it reaches the engine drive shaft.

The belt goes onto a pulley on the engine drive shaft (above the PTO clutch and pulley, which have to come off). I couldn't slide the drive pulley down the shaft, so pulled the 4 engine mounting bolts and move the engine around slightly to allow putting the new belt on between the pulley and it's surrounding sheet metal. Once the belt was on, and before any other steps, I realigned the engine mounting holes and replace the bolts.

The belt is then run around the pulleys under the middle section of the tractor. Leave the spring loaded idler pulley for last. you might need to loosen (not remove) the bolt that goes through the idler pulley in order to get the belt on. The biggest fight is pulling the spring loaded pulley over so that you can put the belt onto it.

Once the belt is fully routed over all pulleys. Reinstall everything that you had to remove - and you should be good-to-go.

ONE LAST COMMENT: Many shops sell belts that DON'T have Kevlar. Make sure you but the one WITH Kevlar. The others rarely last one season.

I have a troy bilt 42 inch 17 hp lawn tractor. The problem is when I cut grass and i get in some thicker grass the blades turn off then I back out the blades restart. The engine never bogs down

One or more of your drive belts is in need of adjustment or replacement, maybe. Possibly, your electric (or manual) PTO clutch could also be adjusted. You do have the spring tensioner on the deck engaged, right? You say the engine doesn't bog when this happens so I am inclined to think "clutch" and/or "PTO belt" to the deck and/or the "deck tensioner" are the things to check.

The tensioner will be the easiest, it is a handle on the left side ON the deck. Has a BIG spring on it. Make sure it is engaged.

Is yours a Troy Bilt manufactured in Troy New York or is it another manufacturer (MTD?). Troy Bilt is actually out of business, having sold the Troy name to a variety of makers depending on the model line. I don't have the run down on who makes what any more (tillers, chippers, mowers, blowers, trimmers, etc.), but Troy Bilt of Troy, NY is no more. :-(

I have a 16 HP Troy with 42 inch deck driven through a electric clutch. I also have a "grass pump" on my deck. Important maintenance tips: Keep the bearings greased, keep the deck clean underneath. The belt on the deck should have the tensioner released when you are NOT mowing. Keep the blades sharp and in good repair. Mow with engine at full speed. When you get to areas of heavy growth, slow the tractor down (hydro drive) or reduce to a lower gear (gear drive). NEVER adjust speed using the "clutch" (hydro drive or gear drive). When you engage the blades (electric or manual) always have the engine just above idle, bring the engine speed up slowly to preserve the belts and reduce stress on all components.

I am sure this is the fix for your trouble. If there is anything else or if I missed the ball, please let me know and we will go further.

Thanks for your question @ FixYa.com

hi there dandaman6

to i/d your tractor model properly there should be a white sticker on the chassis or under the seat
with markings example 14ay809p063

make a note of this and go to

http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=troy_bilt
select lawn tractors from list , then select model from list if its there

http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=troy_bilt
or if your model is a garden tractor select garden tractors from the list
then select your model from the list

make note of belt routing before removing belt from tractor pulleys

there should be a bolt in the centre of the pulley , undo it as you would normally, then remove the double pulley assy by pulling it or punching it from the other side if its stubborn - but do not bend it

thould should allow belt to slip off from pulleys and be guided back through belt guides , if they cannot be removed from location ( but most should be able to ) have a look at their mounts
they will be either bolted or welded or be spring loaded to stay in position

if you can get me your numbers off the white sticker on your ride on
i will do my best to help further

cheers hope it helps
