Question about Troy Bilt 5.5hp Self Propelled Mower

1 Answer

Starting issues. Can't pull cord.

My Sears/B&S lawn mower is giving me starting issues. Starting cord broke I removed top parts repaired and replaced. Started and rand 4 or 5 times since. Now it will not pull. The recoil mechanism pulls when off the motor but cannot be budged when fastened in place. The mower can be started using the old fashioned loose cord method so I know nothing is locked up in blade or motor. I have problems with the recoil mechanism that I cannot troubleshoot. Thanks.

Make sure your flywheel brake is not engaged or the cover is hindering the mechanism somehow after it is installed

I have a top load F&P smart drive washing machine. It has been unplugged for two days.i have just plugged it in and the panel lit off briefly. When I push start button, nothing happens.

Hello Maureen Hooper,

I know this is going to sound poor... but check the power at the outlet first (good bet statistically)... Visually inspect the cord for any damage.

If you have access to beg, borrow or buy a volt-ohm meter
you want to make sure your cord is good end to end...
(measuring into your machine (looking into the hot & neutral).

Then you are going to need to go ON-LINE with your model number to find your primary power control...

On my machine a circuit board is accessed by removing the top panel from the rear of the machine (many videos available).

Most appliance parts houses now have video examples of PRECISELY HOW to ACCOMPLISH your repair... on-line chat & human support.

Most all the repair parts are the same quality... so if you can get our OWN PART NUMBER from your original documents... you came correctly shop buy PRICE ALONE.

While SEARS has the best on-line library.. they also TYPICALLY charge the HGHEST prices for the EXACT SAME PARTS you can buy everywhere (including eBay & AMAZON)...

and SEARS gets rude & pushy... (in my personal experience).

Hope this helps...

Pull rope on sears 5.0 lawn mower pulls hard sometimes or you pull the cord and the spindle does not always turn. I guess it's not catching all the time. What can I do for it ?

If mower has sit outside for a while the works in the recoil may be rusty and dry. Try some oil in all the working parts. See if that works for you.

I have a Toro Self Propelled lawn mower. The pull cord broke when I tried starting it. As I went to fix the cord I noticed that the spring to pull the cord broke. Is there any way to fix the spring...

You need to obtain the model number off the engine and go to a website that has small engine parts, and likely schematics. Enter the model number and find your engine and when you get a list of illustrated parts drawing select the one for the starter or recoil strarter or some such listing. This will give you an exploded view illustrated parts drawing and you need to find the broken parts. Take the number that identifies it on the drawing and look to the associated table. This will give you a part number and allow you to order it.

I hope this helps.

The string that you pull to start the mower has snapped. How can I replace it or where.

You can buy a new cord from a mower repair shop. The pull- starting assembly needs to be removed and the new cord installed. A repair shop can easily do this. You can do it, too, if you have reasonable experience with mechanical repairs.

Lawnmower Starting Pull Cord Replaement

There will be a piece of casing that holds the starter mechanism in. Usually held by 4 screws (probably torx screws unless it's an old machine).
Undo these screws and you will find the cord carrier inside.
Observe how the starter dogs are located, and how it all goes together.
You may be able to remove & replace the cord without taking the carrier off the casing, but it is probably easier if you do.

Then you simply remove the old cord, thread a new cord through the hole & tie it. Reassemble the carrier onto the casing. Thread the cord out of the casing & through the handle, tie that end.
Then wind the cord around the cord carrier until there is a slight tension on the spring.
Screw the casing back on the mower and you're away.
