Question about Bose Lifestyle 48 System
THE REMOTE WORKS ONLY ABOUT 3 TO 6 INCHES AWAY FROM THE MEDIA CENTER.
The first solution is wrong. (no offense to the Guru)
This can not be caused by any settings, so save yourself the hassle.
The LS38 does use RF and IR, but if the remote works at all, RF is already active. 'IR control' is only for using other universal remotes on this system.
If shaking the remote does not cause a rattle, then there's probably nothing wrong with the remote. Also nothing wrong with any dip switches. (I'm assuming you've tried new batteries)
The power supply cable (DC power) at the back of the media center also doubles as the receiving antenna for the RF remote. Straighten this cable out as much as possible. Make sure it's not wrapped around any other cables, power cables especially. This should solve your problem.

Fastest way to check would be to hook up your Video output to a TV if you haven't already done so. Then, pull up the Bose Menu go to "remote settings" and see if it's set to "IR" if so switch to "RF" it has much better range and is useable anywhere in the house. Now I'm not sure on the lifestyle 48 but I do believe there are dipswitches in the remote under the battery cover. You need the manual to decifer what they are for however, that may be your problem as well. If you don't have your manual, go to www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/hometheater/lifestyle_systems/dvd_systems/lifestyle_48/index.jsp#manuals You can download both the user manual and the install guide for free as well as get updates for your unit. the most recent disc update was May 15th and you again can request a disc for free!
My hunch is that the batteries in your remote were replaced and a dipswitch was bumped and moved. It happens. Hope this helps. If not post a reply and we can try other fun stuff too.
