Well, you may need to update or reinstall the microphone driver. Go the manufacturer's website to download the compatible driver and install it manually. Or you could download and install the driver automatically with an driver utility OSToto Driver Talent. After driver reinstall, your microphone might work. Good luck.

Download the latest Sigmatel driver from the Dell support site. Once installed, your microphone port should now work.

I have a web cam in my monitor. It won't work, the computer (XPS 420) won't even recognize it. How do I get it?

Kindly check if it's still detected on Device Manager. If the driver has been removed, there should be a question mark right beside the name of the device. Try reinstalling the driver, To simplify your search, type in te service tag number of your computer. (It's a 7 alpha numeric identifier code which can be found on the dell sticker)

I have a dell xps 400 with front and rear

Start by going to Dell's website & enter your service tag under support, drivers & downloads. Window's update is just general listing & it doesn't know what driver you have, except that it didn't match thier data. Truthfully, thier data sucks & should only be used if the actual drivers from the manufacture are not available. I just looked up your model & there's 3 possible drivers. You may have the Creative Labs audio, in which case the driver you have is wrong. You can also go to & run a scan & at the end click on the "drivers" tab & it will show you if there's a driver issue & what revision you should have. Sometimes you have to go to the chip maker's site for the latest releases. Also, try a different mic if you can too.

My microphone not working on my dell xps 420 vista system

double click on the speaker and make sure that the mic does not have the mute box with an x in it.

I am pretty certain you have a card in your computer for it mentions a 7.1 speaker system.
If you put your service code in to do a search for drivers you will get the correct ones for your particular machine. Download install and reboot.
If you are not using six speakers and one sub woofer then the pink one in the back is the mic
