Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

1 Answer

Refrigerator side temp keeps dropping below freezing.

I have a kenmore side by side refrigerator model #253.537293. The stuff on the top shelf of the refrigerator side keeps freezing even though I've got the refrigerator side thermostat set to zero. Everytime the compressor runs, the fan kicks on that blows cold air into the refrigerator side. When I first checked the temp of the freezer side it was below zero. I've set the freezer thermostat to 2 and now the temp is holding steady at 0 degrees. However, there's been no improvment on the refrigerator side. Could this be a problem with the refrigerator side thermostat? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

So, by setting the freezer side colder it should lower the temperature on the refrigerator side? Should I set the refridgerator temp control back to normal?

So far the frige side has dropped to 20 degrees.

Thanks again for your help. So far the temp has dropped to 20 in the refrigerator and the fan is still blowing cold air into the fresh food side. If I need to replace the thermostat should I replace the fresh food one or the frozen food one?

  • rjbailey May 26, 2009

I pulled out the fresh food thermostat to test it and I wasn't sure which to connections to test with my ohmsmeter. There is a black wire, a red one, and also a purple one. In addition, there is a green wire at the bottom corner that I'm assumeing is a ground. I tested the black and red connectors with the ohmsmeter and didn't get a reading.

When the whole thermostat is disconnected, the back fan still runs blowing air into the fresh food compartment, is that normal?

Set the freezer temp control to MAX cold and see if it improves.
If not replace the off/on thermostat.(cold control)

No. Leave it on the lower setting for now.
When you set the freezer for colder, you are closing the damper to the fresh food section thereby making it (fresh food)warmer. If the unit still does not cycle off after this test replace the thermostat.
You will have to wait 24 hours to know for sure.

SOURCE: Top shelf of old sub-zero refigerator 60 degrees, bottom shelf OK

u may have a defrost problem it would be worth paying for the service call if something simple like defrost or a fan would still be more than 200 but worth it

If it is only freezing on the upper shelf then you will need to replace the "air diffuser". It is not closing when the refrigerator temp is reached. Here is the part to order.

Improper air flow is your problem, Defrost it first. Then make sure that the fan inside is running, if it isn't, replace it. Repairclinic.com will have what you need, just search with your model number. Let me know if you need anything else.

Food on the top shelf and in the bottom drawer keeps freezing

I'd check the temp control and up the temp abit instead maybe you have it all the way down low at the lowest setting, that will cause the contents to freeze.

My Frigidaire refrigerator side by side is freezing drinks.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Kenmore elite - Water dripping from freezer to refrigerator

Your refrigerator has a defrost drain blockage behind the evaporator in your your freezer compartment. Some models like yours have leak in the turns as the water leaves the freezer. I recommend that you unplug and remove the cover to the evaporator and check the defrost condensate tray below the evaporator. A wet vacuum cleaner and poring a solution with clorox in the drain will help you clean locate the leak and where the blockage may be downline.. I do have the manual on yours and can help you solve this. Some times this is a factory defect and I can help you solve the freezing drain problem. Let me know, Sea Breeze

Refigirator is freezing my liquids on top shelf only

If its anything like a GE refrigerator, there is a flapper valve between the freezer and refrigerator that controls the temp of the refrigerator compartment. There should be a plastic shroud at the top refrigerator compartment against the freezer wall. Remove it and see if the flapper is broken. Usually you can epoxy the flapper or if not, buy a new part.
Keep in mind my experience is with a GE, but I think its pretty much the same machine.
