A USB port puts out 500ma, and will charge your phone perfectly fine and will NOT damage the phone. That is the way I charge all my phones. The statement that if you don't utilize the ports full voltage potential (5v.) that it will raise the voltage is not true. I am an Electrical Engineer and that is simply not possible and 5v. will not hurt your 3.7v. battery, otherwise most 3.7v phones wouldn't come with a USB charger, right? The power supply of the computer regulates the voltage, you can only DROP voltage if you EXCEED 500ma. Hope this helps, and charge away!

- One more thing I forgot, Most all cell phones batteries are 3.7v. I really cant remember seeing one that wasn't but if you have an old phone you might want to check the battery to see what voltage it is before you make a charger by cutting the end off the bad charger and connecting the wires to that of a charger you no longer need, just in case. A 5v. battery will charge on a lower voltage, say 3.7v, but it will simply take a little longer to charge up. But be careful about the opposite, like charging a 3.7v battery with a charger over 5v. or you most likely will smoke the battery or worse, start a fire when it explodes!
