You more than likely need a new pilot assembly. If it is a HPC (Hearth Product Controls) unit contact HPC directly and see if they can give you a name and number of a dealer locally to service the unit you are discussing or diagnose the problem over the phone. HPC is actually very helpful and knowledgeable. If you call them 9 times out of 10 they can give you the solution, part number, and a dealer where you can purchase the part from locally. Just make sure to have the model and serial number before you give them a call. Contact

Reliance is made by AO Smith company, and air intake located on bottom of unit.
Make sure you have adequate incoming air and vent is working.
Remember, the pilot is located upwards from the viewing sight-glass, so it is sometimes difficult to see pilot.
Pilot flame must burn clear blue, with bits of yellow and red. Yellow flame means inadequate air supply or venting.

Totai heater wont stay on after lit

Without a pilot flame sensor signal the pilot light will not stay on and the heater won't work. Try Replacing the pilot flame sensor, the pilot flame burns on to it and it connects to the valve. It looks like a wire.

Pilot light will not stay lit.

More than likely the thermal couple is defective. The thermal couple is a safety device that shuts the gas off if the pilot goes out. If it is defective the pilot light will not stay lit. The thermal couple is the device that the small copper line goes to. It is mounted beside the pilot flame and the flame much touch the TC for it to work. If the flame is not touching the TC bend it until it is in the flame. If it is touching the TC then replace it.

I HAVE A DESA LP VENTLESS FIREPLACE AND THE PILOT WILL NOT STAY LIT

the heater makes use of a millivolt generator which generates a small dc voltage (500-750mv) that is applied to the pilot valve of your main gas valve. when you light your pilot, the flame bathes the generator with a flame. after a delay you release the pilot button. if the generator is working, the pilot valve will stay lit. if the generator is not working the flame will go out as soon as you release the pilot button. change the generator.
