Sewer gas smell from tub.

Our house is 2 yrs old, built on a cement slab. Recently, after a my daughter's big family visited, and we were using the tubs and washers etc A LOT, we now have sewer gas fumes coming up from our tub. We have check the vent, clear, have sumped bleach down the drain, and that works until you use the shower again. The toilet in that bath bubbles when our washer drains. Are these connected? Before we cut down walls to get to the pipes, what should we do?

Something was flushed that should not have been flushed
You will have to have your drain snaked out.

I get a very strong smell from my maytag atlantis washer. it smells like the sewer. how do i remove that smell?

Confirm that the sewer trap is working. The sewer trap for a washer is the pipe connection where the washer drain hose connects.

It would not be likely that the trap is a problem. Sewer gas and mold can smell similar. Smell around the hose connection. Some older homes just simply had a drain to the outside
26162560-vtficdakbbyhbpkipaftpy0h-4-0.png Next this machine is a top loader and if it is being used several times a week the problem is likely around the tub on top. Mold will form in the tub under the basket if it is not run weekly. Normal wash cycle in a top loader should keep under the basket clear. If a week or so occurs between use then the problem can be under the basket at the bottom of the tub. Use bleach, vinegar, or baking soda in moderation to clear.

It is more likely that the problem is around the top of the top. this requires opening the top and swinging it back to get access. Make sure power is removed before attempting.

Cleaning a little bleach, soap and water.

Sewer smell in house from septic tank and idle system

If the house has been sitting for a long time, the traps may have dried out and are not stopping the sewer gasses from being trapped back, flush all toilets and run some water in all the sinks and tubs, to refill the p-traps, also don't forget to pour some water down the washer drain pipe. HOPE THIS HELPS...

What does a freon leak in a deep freeze smell like?

Freon is odorless. A sewer odor could be caused by an unused sink, tub, or floor drain trap where the water has evaporated. A gas odor is a very serious issue that should be checked immediately by the gas company or the fire department. Gas can seep in from a leak outside the house or accumulate in a wall if a fitting fails.

Rotten eggs smell

The smell is sewer gas coming back in the house from the sewer or septic tank ether from a dried out water trap in a floor or fixture drain, or from the roof vent, or a hole or separation in pipe or fitting. Like wax ring under toilet. First pore water down every drain to fill any trap that might have gone dry, then flush toilet or run washer or drain bath tub. This will displace gas in pipe and will cause the smell to increases if there is no smell then the problem is fixed if not check roof vent it may need a charcoal filter on top, There is no water trap on air vent on roof and is an open hole to the sewer or septic, The heating system in the winter or AC in summer will draw the gas inside from the vent.If it is the vent you should be able to smell it from outside. If all tests fails You will need to have a smoke test done. A smoker is set up outside and the line is filled with smoke and will show where gas is coming from. Also it might be a good ideal to check all gas fittings in case it is a gas leak.

Sewer smell in clothes

The tub is probably pretty dirty. Try cleaning the washer with CLR.

Now it is summer, and we have a horrible smell coming out of jacuzzi drainage, what should we use to get rit of the smell

hiya:) all tubs, sinks, etc are plumbed w/a P-trap which holds water and prevents sewer gasses from venting into your home. if the unit has not been used in a while the water may have evaporated, allowing the sewer gas to pass freely into your home. this is not only unpleasant it is potentially dangerous and/or unhealthy. IF the unit has not been in use for some time then just run the water for a min and the smell should go away. If this is not the problem just text me back and we'll go from there:)

I have just remodeled a old condo with new toilets and I am getting a strong gas smell. How can I get rid of it. I am in Thailand and the building is 22 years old.

jajoy,

Did you connect the sanitary pipe stack to the sewer line that takes away the flushed effluent? Check to see that the pipe is connected, not leaking sewer gas, not plugged up with an animal carcass, and that the pipe extends through your roof three feet past the roof line (keeps smell out of house).

Fowl smell in bathroom

Fowl smells related to plumbing can have several causes. Here's a few potential issues that you can check. If none of them solve the problem you may need to call a plumber.

1) Look at your pedestal sink drain connection. Is there an an elbow connecting to your drain or a P Trap? A p trap is a pipe shaped like the letter "p" (hence the name) and it prevents sewer gas from rising into the bathroom. **sometimes an apprentice plumber puts in a pedestal without a p trap because they are fairly difficult to install, and ALL fixtures need P traps. If there is no P trap, then you need to put one in. It will be a tight space, but you may be able to do it yourself.

2) Do you have a floor drain? If so, your sink will need a trap primer at the drain. Or you can pour water into the drain from time to time before it evaporates from the trap

3) If the smell is more of a sulfur type smell and it appears from running water in other places in the house, then it could also be due the type of tank you have if you are on well water

My offhand guess is that number 1 is your issue.

Without further info, those are some of my best solutions so far, but if none of these are potential solutions, then make the following tests

1) close the door to the bathroom and leave it for an hour or two. Return to the room. Do you smell sewer smell? Is it in the entire room or more concentrated in a certain area? If you don't have a floor drain and its everywhere, there could be a missing P trap from a fixture, a lose toilet flange, a cracked drain pipe
2) without running water, smell your drain. Does it have a sewer smell? Then the P trap either is not present or you need to clean the drain with a drain cleaner due to a list of reasons
3) run water. does the sewer smell increase or does one suddenly appear. Is the smell more a different odor than sewer. See if it is the water itself. If so, check other places. If they do not have the smell then you may have recently installed your sink and there is some smell related to the new valve. Then you would need to use it some more until it disappears.

Check the top list, though because I really think you're just missing a P trap

Sewer breaks below the slab, an open pipe somewhere, some issue with the water supply, are among some other issues but that depends on the test

Sewer Gas Smell Coming From Bath Tub

I can think of two possible solutions to this issue.

  1. The trap is installed incorrectly. The trap is the portion of the drain that is U shaped under the tub. The wastewater must come out of the tub and into the trap. From the trap it goes into the trap arm which must remain horizontal until it reaches the vent. This is very important. The vent must remain vertical until it is at least 6" above the rim of the tub.
  2. The sewer could be plugged. Not the tub but the main sewer line. When this occurs the water has no where to go so it forces the air in the line to take the path of least resistance and that usually menas the tub since the shower has a 2" trap. You may hear a bubbling sound when flushing. The drain may not be completely plugged so it would appear as an intermittent problem.
Hope this helps and please remember to rate this!
