Question about Technics SL-PG450 CD Player

Open Question

No sound on a Technics SL-PG450 CD Player

I currently have a Technics CD player SL-PG450 which had issues reading discs. The machine would attempt to play then stop, then start again. At the point of reading a disc the unit would play as tho you were listening to the Chip-Munks until you skipped half way along the disc then it would play at normal speed. This behaviour was different everytime. Adjusting the lens focus had no effect, neither did adjusting the spin motor did anything either, so out came the laser assembly unit in place for another one. Having said that the laser didn't turn on half the time either. I also had a couple of the earlier model Technics SL-PG300 which I thought to make the attempt to establish a complete rebuilt working model out of the two players. I tested and compared the two assembly units along with the loading tray and switched over the two loading trays with its laser assembly in it from a SL-PG300 into a SL-PG450. The problem I have now, is that I had solved the reading issue in the SL-PG450 reads discs within a second or two, and searches and skips beautifully. The problem I am getting now, is no sound. Each time you play a disc you hear a small pop sound and nothing more, but if you listen using earphones through the unit you hear hiss and mutes this sound whenever the disc is skipped or stoppped. I compared the pin outs from the main PCB board between the two players leading towards the laser assembly unit as they were numbered and had writing on the PCB board at each pin as this was correct. What I can't follow, is that now the SL-PG450 reads and plays a disc fine, but no sound is heard from the unit. Any ideas?
Cheers,
Pete

SOURCE: Technics SL-MC7 / Can't play cd's any more!

Friend. Did you try a CD that you purchased from the store? if so and this problem persist, then you need to get you a new player. If the CDs are scratched, some players will not play them, If they are burnt in mp3 format, (or data format) your player may not recognised this also. Please try playig a regular CD that you bought from the store, if this work, then you will need to reburn your music as a regular CD, hoping that the SL-MC700. reads copied. It should. But please checks these steps.

Please let me know what works.

Thank you

SOURCE: Is my laser unit needing replaced on my Technics

Cleaning the laser as you rightly say will not solve your problem. I have a Technics SL-PS700 which although quite ancient by todays standards also had the same problem as yours I have however fixed it using the same principle I apply to DVD recorders, playstations, Xboxes.
The operating frequency of the laser is set to a usable level by the manufacturer and over time the power tends to reduce. Other than replacing the laser unit which can be expensive, an adjustment to the laser needs to be done.
I'd recommend you get hold of a service manual first but it may not be necessary. If you are happy to get your hands dirty and are confident enought ot open the player, You'll need to get to the underside of the laser unit which normally means the whole CD tray mechanism needs to removed.
Not as scary as it may sound as long as you A - make notes of how it all comes apart by writing down the disassembly steps or/and take photos of the stages.
Underneath the laser unit you should find what looks like a little screw. This is infact a potentiometer this controls the the power of the laser. A pot tool (plastic should be used to make the adjustment but if you are careful a small slotted screw driver will do. Turn the pot one eigth of a turn clockwise this will raise the power slightly. Now test a CD to see if it plays. I don't reassemble until I can get a disc to play Just avoid looking at the laser unless you want to damage your eyes. Normally on turn does the trick and the CD will play once more.
Some say this shortens the life of the laser but that is only true if it is over adjusted. The manufacturer builds in an adjustment factor to enable service engineers to do this. In a workshop environment an engineer would use an oscilloscope to visually check the frequency according to manufacturer guidelines but these lovely pieces of kit are beyond most of us cost wise. If you require more clarity let me know

this player uses a philips mechanism, spindle motor failure is very common on these mechanisms, yours may be on its way out. take the lid off and insert a cd and if you can hear the laser trying to read the cd without it spinning, it's definately the spindle motor.

The Optical Pickup(laser) has worn out. When you place a disc in the drawer, it has to load and read the TOC(table of contacts) if if can't read that, it assumes there is no CD in the drawer and stops or ejects.

I have a Technics CD changer SL-PD867 it will not play re writable disc's all other disc ok

You should realize that this player is about 20 years old.
It was not designed to read CD-R or CD-RW media.
The signal from these media types is different from audio CDs you buy.

Technics SL-MC60 error message: "Take out"

Hello
If a disc has been put in the slot of the disc in play, Remove the disc, whose number is displayed, and press stop button.
Because of light or noise, the changer has detected a disc in the lot of the disc being played, even though it is empty. Check whether there is a disc in the displayed slot. With front panel closed, hold down "STOP " button for atl least four seconds or more.

I buy a used technics sl-pg480a cd player and after i inserted a cd, there is "no disc" on display...i try with different cd's (mp3, avi,...) and it's always the same...i have opened a box and...

If it doesn't turn the disc it can't read the data and 'know' from that there is a compatible disc inserted.

You may have gotten hosed by the seller. Until you get it to play with a commercial music CD I wouldn't try anything non-standard or home-grown. It doesn't play anything but CD-A music so MP3 and AVI discs would not be recognized anyway.

Before you dive in and possibly wreck it, read this...
