Question about Dell Inspiron 1150 Latitude D600 14.1 LCD Display-LP141X14 CD-ROM Drive

Dell Inspiron 1150 - Wont boot & nothing on screen ??

I'm totally frustrated with my Dell 1150 ! Powers on fine, fan spins, then stops for a while (without the power cutting out), then will keep on going fine. Fans are all cleaned & dust free, CUP and under heatsink both have fresh thermal paste covering them (so no overheating). Have tried various memory, which has all been tested on other machines (though they were D600s). Machine runs fine from psu and from battery, battery charges. Processor is a 2.6GHz - could my memory be wrong ?
I'm just not getting anything on screen, nor can I get it to post to an external monitor (assuming my keyboards fN function is working).
Anyone got any ideas ?? And will running a driver disk help ??
Here's hoping someone can point me in the right direction !! :o)

Thanks for taking the time to reply Ed :o)

Perhaps, if you don't mind, could you direct me to where the cmos jumper / switch is - I'm okay with the basics, but can't find this.

It's a Dell Inspiron 1150 - F3542. I'm assuming the cmos battery is on the underside, as I haven't taken it off the base as yet ?

And Happy Memorial Day to you ! UK philistine that I am not knowing :o)

The fans on this unit are thermostatically controlled and only turn on when the predefined processor temperature is reached, so upon turning the unit on It will spin up too full speed and then seem to shut down until it is needed.
If you are getting no beep tones and since you have already tested your memory, I am forced to assume that either your processor has retired or your cmos is wrong, Since you sound like you have already opened the unit then locate the clear cmos jumper/switch on the board and clear your cmos which will reset to defaults.....if you still have the same problem then I reccomend trying a different processor.

If you can give me the name of the Motherboard...? That is the only way that I can locate the jumpers, all motherboards are different,

If you are unable to locate the jumpers, you should see on the board a "button" battery, about the size of a nickle, If you remove this battery and wait about half an hour then replace tha Batt, it should reset the bios to defaults.

    Happy Memorial day!

On the back/bottom of your computer you have a sticker lables "service tag"

If you can give me that number I can direct you in the right direction, or you can follow this link , choose "enter service tag" and that will lead you to the manual which will tell you how to reset the CMOS on your particular system

Sorry for so many questions, but hopefully this will be the last.

Disconnect the battery, unplug it, then open it up. There should be a small round battery called the CMOS battery somewhere in there. Pull that out. Then plug your computer in and boot it up without the CMOS battery. It should say password disabled. Turn it off, disconnect it, put it back together, and you're good to go.

You may want to check the power supply fan whether it works properly or not. Also, you may need to check your BIOS setup if you had done anything with it.

Boot problem on inspiron 1150

Try connecting it to an external monitor.
When you do, as soon as you press the power button to turn on the laptop, close the laptop lid - as this forces the laptop to display on an external monitor.
If this works, then it means the laptop screen is bad.
If it doesn't, the most likely cause would be that the laptop video card went bad.
For a while, some older Dell laptops with high-end nVidia graphics cards tended to die suddenly.
