My Dell 6100 will not load the OS

I have a Dell 6100 that will not loas the windows XP. When I power up the machine it boots up to the Dell name then will stay black with no pointer or any other images on the laptop. I can boot to the testing software and the boot dos command using F2 and F12 at start up but my F4 does not work.. I have run the diagnositcs the other system test but all show the computer working fine. This is perplexing me...and ideas or help would be greatly appreacated. Thank you. Bibleash

I just found this on the web. Should I try it? Do I really have to remove all the hardware to test it?

When you get the system to boot up,run dell diagnostics full extended test on everything. If the system passes all tests, and you still have the problems, remove the hard drive, optical drive, memory modules, and battery. Then hold the power button and the fn key down for 10 seconds,if all the lights(Caps lock,Scroll lock,Num lock, not the wifi) across the front of the system blink(power light should stay lit also).Your MOBO and or video card need to be replaced.

This could possibly be your video card. Can you try changing it out?

Use the Bootcfg utility in the Recovery Console to correct the Boot.ini file:
  1. Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to start your computer.
  2. When you receive the message to press R to repair Windows by using the Recovery Console, press the R key.
  3. Select the Windows installation that you want, and then type the administrator password when prompted.
  4. Type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER.
  5. When the Windows installation is located, the following instructions are displayed: Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
[Type Y in response to this message.]

    Enter Load Identifier:
[This is the name of the operating system. Type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition.]

    Enter OS Load options:
[Leave this field blank, and then press ENTER]. After you perform the preceding steps, restart the computer, and then select the first item on the boot menu. This should allow Windows XP to start normally.

After Windows XP has successfully loaded, the Boot.ini can be modified to remove the incorrect entry.

First, be sure you have your genuine copy of Windows XP -if not, you can contact Dell and ask them a copy of it
1)insert the XP disc on the drive then turn off the computer 2)Turn on again the computer and once you press the power button, keep on tapping on F12 3)You should be seeing the Boot Options. Select CD/DVD and keep on tapping on ENTER once you see the message: "press any key to boot from CD/DVD" 4)if you have done it succesfully, you should see a loading bar that says, Setup is loading files. 5)wait for it to load and Just follow the steps on this link:

I have a hp pavilion 2120tx with windows 7 and i want to dual boot windows 7 and windows xp [windows 7 first]

You can create a Dual Boot in ur machine....
C: XP
D: or E: or F: as Win7

You need to re-format your disk, back up all critical data in your disk....
once done...boot with XP disk in CD drive....
after format, create multiple partitions....C: , D: , E: etc as per your preference
install XP in C:
once done...start PC and let the machine boot from C: XP...once you get Desktop in XP
install Win7 in D: or E: as prefered....once done..
in the startup screen you will get these 2 options
1 load earlier version of Windows
2 Windows 7
to make Win7 as default, right click on My computer (Win7), Properties / Advancd System Settings / Advanced Tab / Startup and Recovery / Under System Startup - Chose the Default OS by the down arrow and the time to it must be displayed in the startup to chose the OS....by this method you can chose Win7 or Xp to load...make your choice as prefered...

Dell Computer- Cannot find Cd-drive

Are you getting an error message saying "CD drive cannot be found"? If so, check the cable connected to your pc or swap that drive with a working cd drive.

Afterward, you have to enter the BIOS and change the BOOT order. Make the CD drive the first boot device and the HDD your second boot device. If the CD is a valid BOOTABLE Windows OS CD you will see the following option directly after the bios loads: "Press any key to boot from cd...."

Please remember that the OS CD only has the Windows Operating Software and will not provide you with the necessary drivers to run all the hardware on your PC. If it is not the original OS cd that came with your system don't even bother as you will have activate windows within 30 days and may not even allow you to enter the OS once installed until windows is activated.

The green or purple Dell CD's will boot on that system with no problem and it will not even ask you for the keys as it is a Dell OEM Windows OS CD. If you try an official Windows XP OS CD you must have the keys for it.

Repair start up failure

Well it depends on how severe is your start up problem, if the OS still loads lets say on Windows XP more or less you just have to repair the boot.ini, if you have your Windows XP CD load it to your computer(make sure that on the BIOS setup the intial boot devce must be your CD ROM) When the initialization finished press R to open the command prompt the type the following;

bootcfg /rebuild
The bootcfg utility will scan your hard drives for any Windows XP installations and then display the results. Follow the remaining steps to add your Windows XP installation to the boot.ini file.

The first prompt asks Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All).
Type Y in response to this question and press Enter.

The next prompt asks you to Enter Load Identifier:.
This is the name of the operating system. For example, type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition and press Enter.

The final prompt asks you to Enter OS Load options:.
Type /Fastdetect here and press Enter.

Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.
Assuming that a missing or corrupt boot.ini file was your only issue, Windows XP should now start normally.
