It seems to be working fine. Just that the light is on. The refrigerator is probably 20+ years old. So I should call a repair person?

Because your refrigerator has a control board everything in the memory is stored there. When an area has a fault the dignostic tend to point you to the area. This could be Defrost element, defrost thermostat or freezer temperature sensor. Have you notice any change in operation since you got this reading during diagnostics? Let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

If you don't mind the code being there and there has nothing been affected I would leave it alone. Fact is I would not touch a thing!

If it don't need fixed don't let anyone bother it. That is an odd, first time I have heard of that happening. Thanks for your vote.

I have a 2006 Pontiac g6 gt and my heat or air will not turn on or rear defrost

You have a computer controlled HVAC system ! It has the capability of setting DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes !
The HVAC control module is a non-GMLAN device that interfaces between the operator and the HVAC system to maintain air temperature and distribution settings. The battery positive and ignition 3 voltage circuits provide power to the control module. The HVAC control module during defrost mode will change the A/C compressor LED status from on to off. The control head displays recirc, outside air, A/C and rear defrost feedback status through LED indicators. The control head has a rear defrost request switch please refer to Rear Window Defogger Description and Operation in Stationary Windows for operation. The HVAC control head will display NO COMMUNICATION when checking DTCs or doing a vehicle diagnostic system check refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle and Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle in Vehicle DTC Information.
The rear window defogger system consists of the following components:
?€¢
Body control module (BCM)

?€¢
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control module

?€¢
Rear Defog relay

?€¢
Rear window defogger grid

Your probably better off taking this to a ASE certified repair facility ! You probably have bad Heater / A/C control panel . HVAC Control Module Malfunction

Yesterday I changed the bimetal defrost thermostat on my Whirlpool Gold bottom freezer refrigerator after getting an "S" on the diagnostic test. Today I am getting an "S" again. Could it be the heater

Check continuity on the heater. If yes and new bimetal means you are pointing at new control board. But also check whether you have any defrost thermistors in your machines. It might be the defrost thermistor.

Where is the defrost timer / does my fridge even have one?

Most often the defrost thermostat fails there should be a diagram or small manual hidden under the kick panel or taped on the back of the refrigerator. I believe this model uses a computer to control all functions including defrost . There should be a way to run diagnostics on this to tell you your problem if you can find the hidden manual.

HOW DO I FORCE A HOTPOINT SIDE BY SIDE REFRIGERATOR (HSS25GFTA) WITH AN ADAPTIVE DEFROST TIMER INTO DEFROST MODE?

Start a diagnotsics mode and enter test code 1 - 4 of the diagnostics to start the defrost mode

Self Diagnostics

To enter Self Diagnostic mode, both temperature control panel displays must be illuminated. A display can be illuminated by pressing an adjacent temperature adjustment button. When both displays are illuminated, set the freezer and refrigerator temperature settings to 5. Simultaneously press and hold all

4 temperature adjustment buttons for approximately 3 seconds. A flashing 0 in the refrigerator and freezer displays will indicate that the refrigerator is in Self Diagnostic mode.

To perform a self diagnostic test, locate the test in Table 2, Diagnostic Tests.

For temperature control panels with single-digit displays, the COLDER temperature adjustment button will increment the numbers up and the WARMER temperature adjustment button will increment the numbers down. Use the freezer temperature adjustment buttons to enter the test code number in the freezer display. Use the refrigerator temperature adjustment buttons to enter the test code number in

the refrigerator display. When a test code has been entered, the displays will flash to confirm the test.

Press the HOLD button for 3 seconds to begin the test.

For temperature control panels with 3-digit displays, the COLDER temperature adjustment button will increment the numbers down and the WARMER temperature adjustment button will increment the numbers up. Use the freezer temperature adjustment buttons to enter the test code number in the freezer display. Use the refrigerator temperature adjustment buttons to enter the test code number in

the refrigerator display. When a test code has been entered, the displays will flash to confirm the test code. Press any button other than a temperature adjust button to begin the test.

When testing has been completed, do one of the following things:

• Enter code 1 5 to completely reset the system.

• Enter code 1 6 to exit diagnostic mode. The temperature control panel is reset automatically.

• Unplug the refrigerator for at least 10 seconds. Test mode will terminate when the refrigerator is plugged back in.
Test mode will terminate automatically after 15 minutes of inactivity.
(or in your case.... after the deforst cycle completes and possibly + 15 minutes)

Kelly

Fridge does not start gives error ds

If you like I can help you locate the problem. The error code may be in the service manual but Im not sure about if the manual will tell you how to run self diagnostics if the mother board or the digital low volatage is affected. I enjoy working on the difficult ones if you would like my assistance, Sea Breeze

At some point prior to your problem a series of buttons were pushed which caused the activation of the CALIBRATION DIAGNOSTICS AND COOL DOWN TEST"

The test can be aborted by doing the following:

Depressing Rear Window Defogger, RECIRC and Rear Wiper buttons.
Cycling Ignition OFF and then ON.
Control will automatically abort after 15 minutes from the time Calibration Diagnostics and Cool down was entered.
The HVAC control module will return to normal operation or may indicate unsuccessful Calibration Diagnostics or Cool down test by LED's flashing simultaneously.
